Rev. Calvin J. Johnson, 87, of Seneca, formerly of the Bradford/Kane areas, went home to his Lord and Savior at 11:15 p.m. on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca following an extended illness.
He was born in West Branch, McKean County on September 12, 1926 to the late Harry and Marguerite Burgwald Johnson.
Calvin graduated from Bradford High School in 1944.
In 1944 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. He served as a radio man aboard the gunship USS Cocopa. He was stationed in the Pacific Theatre as well Pearl Harbor.
Mr. Johnson was an owner and operator for many years in the oil and gas leasing industry.
He was born again into God’s eternal kingdom in August of 1963, and later attended seminary at the Houghton Bible College and graduated with a degree in theology in 1972.
Rev. Johnson spent many years as a pastor where he served and glorified his Lord Jesus Christ. He served as pastor of the Kushequa Church near Mount Jewett for several years and was ordained into the Christian community there by the Rev. Keefer, Rev. Pytcher, and Rev. Sayers on Easter Sunday, 1988.
He was married by Rev. Keefer on June 13, 1975 to the former Kathryn I. Cope, who survives.
Also surviving is a son, Robert L. Johnson of Seneca; a grandson, Isaiah Johnson also of Seneca; his sister, Marion Freeman and husband Richard of Pittsburgh; a sister-in-law, Shirley Lawrence of Oil City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and seven sisters.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, FEBRUARY 8th, in the Grace Baptist Church on Rte. 257 in Seneca. The Rev. Glenn Miller, church pastor, will officiate.
Interment will be in Kanesholm Cemetery in McKean County.
