John J. Markovich

John J. Markovich, 91, of Titusville, died peacefully at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, February 2, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

Mr. Markovich was born April 30, 1922 in Titusville a son of the late Alex Markovich and Clara Cosper Markovich. He attended Colestock High School.

John was a veteran of World War II having been inducted into the U.S. Army January 6, 1943 at Erie. He served with Headquarters Company, 817th Tank Destroyer Battalion, Tennessee Maneuver Area. John was honorably discharged January 3, 1944 at Tennessee Maneuver Area with the rank of private.

He was a member of St. Titus Church. John was a former member of the Optimist Club and American Legion Post 368.

John was formerly employed at Struthers-Wells Corporation in Titusville and Titusville YMCA where he served as physical director for over 45 years. He was an important part of the lives of many children and families in the Titusville area for many, many years; loved by all who knew him.

He was an avid fan of Notre Dame University, Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Indians. John also loved traveling, camping and taking walks with his loving wife Norma.

Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Norma Ruff Markovich whom he married May 12, 1944 at St. Titus Church rectory; two daughters, Francie Bowers and her husband Jim of Friedens, PA and Linda Kesler and her husband

Daniel of Chambersburg, PA; a sister Martha Leri of Meadville; many nieces and nephews including Mary L Berglund of North Carolina; and a cousin Betty Cosper of Titusville.

He was preceded in death by a sister Catherine Nellis and a brother Michael L. Markovich.

At Mr. Markovich’s request, no calling hours or funeral service will be observed. Following cremation, inurnment will be in St. Catharine Cemetery columbarium.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in John’s name to Titusville YMCA, 201 W. Spring St., Titusville, PA 16354, Titusville Area Hospital 406 W. Oak St., Titusville, PA 16354 or to Hospice of Crawford County, 310 N. Monroe St., Titusville, PA 16354.

Arrangements are under the direction of Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, Inc. 203 E. Main St., Titusville, PA 16354.
