Homer G. Nevel

Homer G. Nevel, of Newton Road, Pittsfield, Pa (Eldred Twp.) passed away at 10:12 am on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was 80.

He was born in Lamartine, PA on September 14, 1933 a son of the late Roy and Bessie Kurtz Nevel, Sr. He had been married to the former Jean Copeline and subsequently married he former Katherine B. Rushton Redfoot on April 5, 1969 and she had preceded him in death on August 25, 2005. Homer had been employed at the General Tire, Ashtabula, Ohio as an instrument electrician, he then went onto work in the maintenance department of Wesley Woods United Methodist Campground from which he had retired. He was a member of the Grand Valley United Methodist Church and had attended the White Oak United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Following the passing of his wife, Homer enjoyed weekly golf outings with his son, Scott. He was an avid outdoorsman and could often be found feeding the deer. Those who knew Homer, remember his smile, his wit and his positive outlook and spirit.

Homer had served as a Deputy Grandmaster of the 25th Masonic District of Ohio in 1981, he was a member of the Titusville Masonic Lodge # 754 and the Titusville VFW Post # 5958 where he had served with the honor guard. He had served as an elected Supervisor for Eldred Twp. for many years. Homer was active in the community and was instrumental in obtaining grants and funding for the 4 H Horse Club and also an ambulance for the Grand Valley Vol. Fire Department where he actively participated and had served as president. He also was a member of the “Over the Hill Gang’ working at the Oil Creek State Park to keep the hiking trails in proper order.

He is survived by a son, Scott Nevel of Ashtabula, Ohio, two daughters, Rina’ Hart and her husband James of Stoneboro and Rebecca Fassett and her husband Ron of Greenville, a brother Terry Nevel of Atlanta, Georgia 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Homer also leaves behind dear friends, Dick Fielding, Vic and Debbie Savitz, Matt and Diana Maille and his dearest friend Vi Wescoat.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Katherine and a brother Roy Nevel.

The funeral and committal service will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Grand Valley United Methodist Church, 107 Good Will Street, Grand Valley, Pa with the Rev. Ralph Culp, Rev. Jerry Gray and the Rev. Lee Baker officiating. The interment will follow at the Millbank Cemetery,
Fredonia. PA. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, Inc. 303 N. Washington Street, Titusville on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9.
