A memorial service will be held Saturday for Dr. Richard Broadhead, M.D., of Sandy Lake, formerly of Murrysville, Pa. He passed away Monday (8-12-13) in his home of natural causes. He was 65.

Born April 3, 1948, in Monongahela, Pa., Dr. Broadhead was the son of Charles H. and Irene M. Machnic Broadhead.

An accomplished scholar and physician, he was a 1966 graduate of Burrell Joint High School; a 1970 alumnus of University of Pittsburgh; and graduated in 1974 from University of Pittsburgh Medical School.

Dr. Broadhead operated a private practice in Murrysville for more than 20 years, then relocated to Polk Center, Venango County, where he was its medical director. As the longtime medical director of Polk Center, he had a true love for his job and the people he cared for.

As a physician, he volunteered his time and expertise traveling around the world to help less fortunate in the Marshall Islands.

He was American Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Geriatrics and was a member of American College of Physicians, the American Society of Internal Medicine, American Registry of Outstanding Professionals, American Society of Contemporary Medicine and Surgery and the National Eagle Scout Association. Richard Broadhead was a lifelong learner, an active member of the medical and social community and far exceeded the list produced.

He treasured experiences, not possessions. He had an immense love for reading, the arts, dancing, traveling, sailing, playing the guitar, coaching archery and spending time with his family.

The memories he created will never be forgotten. He was the small town’s Santa, and loved by many. He enjoyed golfing and had his first hole-in-one last year. He enjoyed cycling and completed the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) 150 ride in 2010.

He is survived by his three children, Anna E. Broadhead, Murrysville; John J. Broadhead and his wife Christine, Fort Myers, Fla.; and Michael D. Broadhead, Sandy Lake; two grandchildren, Alexander F. and Ava Grace Broadhead, both Fort Myers; and a sister, Mary K. DeWitt, Cartersville, Ga.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial tributes be made in his name to Polk Center, Box 94, Polk, PA 16342.
