Mrs. Edith I. Herman, 91, of 511 Denny Ave., Ellwood City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in the Ellwood City Hospital at 6:15 am.
Mrs. Herman was born on October 22, 1921 in Brookville, Pa to the late Peter and Marie Ferrari Maffei. In her youth her family moved from Brookville to Youngstown , Ohio. She graduated from the East High School in Youngstown with the class of 1941. She then married her husband of almost 70 years, Alex Herman, on August 28, 1943 and moved to Ellwood City. She is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish and the Christian Mothers of the Holy Redeemer Parish. While raising her children, she loved attending their sporting events. She also was a cafetaria volunteer at the former St. Agatha School. Edith was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking, and baking for her family. She also was an avid bingo player.
Mrs. Herman is survived by her husband Alex, three sons and daughters-in-law, Alex C. (Lora) Herman of Union, KY, Thomas J. (Trista) Herman of Erie, & Richard P. (Paula) Herman of Clarion, four grandchildren, Alex Herman, Julia Shumaker, Lindsey M. Herman, Amanda Mateja, and two great grandchildren, Lana Shumaker, & Mya Shumaker. She is also survived by one sister, Esther Maffei of Boardman, OH.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Inez Maffei, & Mary Kuprus, and three brothers, Eugene, Joseph, & Leo Maffei.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:00 am in the Holy Redeemer Parish with Father Camillus Njoku officiating. Entombment will be at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery St. Peter’s Mausoleum. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday by 9:20 am. Members of the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers are sked to meet at the church on Friday by 9:50 am to form an honor guard.
