Paul W. Usoff Sr.

Paul W. Usoff Sr., 84, of Oak Grove Circle, Franklin, passed away at 9:50 a.m. on Saturday, July 13th, 2013, at his residence following an illness. Born in Franklin, on July 13, 1929, Paul was the son of the late George and Maude Hudkovia Usoff.

He was a graduate of Franklin High School, and a member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church. Paul also was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus and the Elk’s Club. He started working for Robert Miller in 1946 when his business was in his garage. In 1947, Paul went to work for Joy Manufacturing Company. At that time, he was a Steno and was also responsible for Reliance Electric Motor Drawings. Paul advanced in the business and became a Senior Draftsman and then went on to become an Electrical Design Engineer. He retired from Joy Manufacturing in 1990.

Paul married Donna Graham in 1949 in Jamestown, PA. They had three children: Debbie, Paul, Jr., and Patty. Donna preceded Paul in death in 1990. They had been married for 41 years. Paul then was married Mary L. Paden on October 15, 1993 in St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church in Franklin by Msgr. Snyder.

Paul belonged to a fishing group which was started by his best friend, Lee Reagle, in 1975. This group called each other “Honey” and continued going to Canada fishing at Lee’s cabin near Kippawa, Canada until 1997. He also enjoyed hunting.

Paul is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Debbie Green and her husband, Dale of Little River, SC; Paul Usoff, Jr., and his wife, Barbara of Franklin; and Patty Green and her husband, Richard of Houston, TX; one brother, Robert Usoff and his wife, Edna, of Franklin; and one sister, Shirley Murnyack, of Painsville, Ohio. He is additionally survived by his 5 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild; his sisters-in-law, Carol S. Paden of San Diego, CA and Beryl Usoff of Middletown, PA; and his brother-in-law, Glen R. Paden, Sr. and his wife, Dorothy of Winsted, Conn. Paul is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and his special friend, Mark Chatley.

In addition to his parents, and first wife, Paul was preceded in death by his 10 brothers and sisters; and his best friend, Lee W. Reagle.

Paul would like to leave his favorite toast to those who knew him well: “Here’s to those who wish us well and all the rest can go to hell!”

Family and friends of Paul will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin on Tuesday, July 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. A Christian Wake Service will be held at the Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 16 at 4:00 p.m. with Deacon Richard Reed officiating. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church, with Msgr. John Herbien as Celebrant. Interment will follow at Graham Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Patrick’s Church School – 949 Liberty Street, Franklin PA 16323.

Elsie Lillian Rodgers, 87, of Franklin, passed away on Sunday, July 14, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Born February 14, 1926 in Philadelphia, Elsie was the daughter of the late Theodore and Elizabeth Smith Post. She was married to Claude Richard Rodgers August 2, 1952, and he preceded her in death on May 20, 1999. Elsie graduated from high school in England. She was a member of St. John’s Espicopal Church, where she was involved in many church activities. She enjoyed quilting and was a member of the Bethal Church Quilters and the Bethal Church Homemakers.

Elsie is survived by her son, Richard F. Rodgers and his wife, Teresa, of Alpharetta, Georgia; her daughter, Robin Murray and her husband, Kim, of Cooperstown; and her grandchildren, Jessica E. Rodgers of Medina, Ohio, and Benjamin R. Rodgers of Lakewood, Ohio. She is also survived by her nephews, Ian Post and his wife, Barbara, of Philadelphia, and Alan Post and his wife, Anne, of Philadelphia; her niece, Adrienne Post Cutts and her husband, Iain, of England; her great-nephew, Jeffrey Ian Post; her great-nieces, Stephanie Post Sneller and her husband, Paul, of California, and Alanah, Ava and Fallon Cutts; and her great-great-nephew, Malcolm James Sneller of California.

In addition to her parents and husband, Elsie was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore Post; and her granddaughter, Christy Rodgers.

Family and friends of Elsie will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin, on Wednesday, July 17 from 3 to 7 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Franklin, on Thursday, July 18 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Frank L. “Jake” Kelly

Frank L. “Jake” Kelly, 76, of 9 Crestview Dr. Franklin, Pa., died at 8:03 P.M. Monday July 15, 2013, at his home after an extended illness.

Born August 29, 1936, in Bruin, PA., he was the son of the late Curt L. & Ethel Eleanor Corbett Kelly.

Jake was married in West Sunbury, Pa., on June 30, 1956, to the former Donna Lee Bell, and she survives.

Mr. Kelly had worked in the coal Industry for Grant Hantz as a loader operator.

He enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting.

He was a member of the Baptist Temple of Franklin.

He is survived by his grandkids: Joshua Christensen, Nathaniel Christensen, Caitland Bolik, and Caleb Christensen.

He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma June Felix and Delores Felix.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Edith I. Herman

Mrs. Edith I. Herman, 91, of 511 Denny Ave., Ellwood City passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 16, 2013 in the Ellwood City Hospital at 6:15 am.

Mrs. Herman was born on October 22, 1921 in Brookville, Pa to the late Peter and Marie Ferrari Maffei. In her youth her family moved from Brookville to Youngstown , Ohio. She graduated from the East High School in Youngstown with the class of 1941. She then married her husband of almost 70 years, Alex Herman, on August 28, 1943 and moved to Ellwood City. She is a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish and the Christian Mothers of the Holy Redeemer Parish. While raising her children, she loved attending their sporting events. She also was a cafetaria volunteer at the former St. Agatha School. Edith was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who enjoyed cooking, and baking for her family. She also was an avid bingo player.

Mrs. Herman is survived by her husband Alex, three sons and daughters-in-law, Alex C. (Lora) Herman of Union, KY, Thomas J. (Trista) Herman of Erie, & Richard P. (Paula) Herman of Clarion, four grandchildren, Alex Herman, Julia Shumaker, Lindsey M. Herman, Amanda Mateja, and two great grandchildren, Lana Shumaker, & Mya Shumaker. She is also survived by one sister, Esther Maffei of Boardman, OH.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Inez Maffei, & Mary Kuprus, and three brothers, Eugene, Joseph, & Leo Maffei.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 & 6-8 pm in the Samuel Teolis Funeral Home, Inc. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:00 am in the Holy Redeemer Parish with Father Camillus Njoku officiating. Entombment will be at the Holy Redeemer Cemetery St. Peter’s Mausoleum. Those attending the funeral mass are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday by 9:20 am. Members of the Holy Redeemer Christian Mothers are sked to meet at the church on Friday by 9:50 am to form an honor guard.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Redeemer Parish, Social Services.

Linville Douglas “Doug” Hughes Sr.

Linville Douglas “Doug” Hughes Sr., of the village of Mariasville, near Emlenton, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 3:50 a.m. Monday, July 15, 2013 while under the care of AseraCare Hospice at Golden Living in Shippenville.

Doug was born June 8, 1943 in Sloan’s Valley, KY, the last child of Hubert and Hattie Hill Hughes.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Rumbaugh Brunsgaard Hughes, whom he married in North Olmsted, OH on July 25, 1981.

Doug graduated from Sloan’s Valley High School, where he was well-known basketball star. He was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from Foseco of Brook Park, OH and later retired from United Airlines in Denver, CO. Doug attended New Zion E.C. Church in Emlenton and always enjoyed discussing doctrinal and scriptural topics. Doug was an avid sports fan and was well known for his love of the Cleveland Browns, the Cavaliers, and Indians. While in Denver, Doug cheered for the Broncos and Avalanche, and while living in Western Pennsylvania, he was a Penguins fan, and loved all things basketball in his home state of Kentucky. Doug made many friends wherever he lived and worked.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Linville Douglas Hughes Jr. of Georgia and Michael Hughes and his wife, Karen, of Dallas, GA; a stepson, Larry Brunsgaard and his wife, Angela, of North Ridgeville, OH; eight grandchildren, Christopher, Courtney and her husband, Zachary, Renee and her husband, Gerald, E.D. Lee, Tyler, Caitlyn, Robert A. “Drew”, and Nina, as well as a great granddaughter, Savannah; a brother, Bobbie Hughes and his wife, Dot, of Somerset, KY; a sister, Mary Helen Francisco of New Orleans, LA and Richmond, KY; two brothers- in-laws, Edward Rumbaugh of Emlenton and Robert D. Rumbaugh and his wife, Julie, of Yorktown, VA; his mother-in-law, Jean Rumbaugh of Emlenton, and a number of nieces and nephews residing from coast to coast, and two children who were very special to Doug, Dylan and Alia Fulkerson of Parker.

In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by two brothers, Hiram, Howard “Jack”, a sister, Edna Schobin, and a step-grandson, Shane Harris, and his father-in-law, Robert Rumbaugh.

Friends will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 1204 Kerr Ave., Emlenton, from 1 – 3 and 6 – 8 p.m. today (Wednesday). A funeral service will be held from the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Thursday with the Rev. Charles J. Campbell, pastor of New Zion E.C. Church, Emlenton, and Pastor Ray Lovett, Baptist pastor and long-time family friend, co-officiating. Interment will be in Rimersburg Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to New Zion E.C. Patricia Elaine Berst

Patricia Elaine Berst, age 69, of Distant, died Monday evening, July 15, 2013 at her home following an illness.

Born December 29, 1943, in Brookville, she was a daughter of the late Ross J. and Sara Leora Zimmerman Ferraro.

Pat married Gregory Berst on June 11, 1994. He survives.

She worked for Rola until its closing then worked in retail for Brodys and Danks.

Pat loved crafts and collected jewelry. She enjoyed working in her flower beds and shopping.

In addition to her husband, Greg, she is survived by a brother, Lanny Ferraro, of Brookville.

She was preceded in death by her parents, numerous aunts and uncles and her father-in-law, Charles Renninger, Sr.

There will be no calling hours.

A graveside memorial service will be held for family and friends at 11 am Saturday, July 20, 2013 at the Westview Cemetery in Summerville.

Reverend Randy Evans, Reverend Robin Stewart and Reverend John Stewart will officiate over the service.

Arthur P. Love

Arthur P. Love, age 93, of Sligo, died Monday afternoon, July 15, 2013 at the Clarview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Sligo.

Born June 27, 1920 in Callensburg, he was a son of the late John Reed Love and Beulah Stoner Love.

He was World War II Veteran, serving in the United States Army Air Corp.

He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad then for the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier.

Arthur married the former Zelda Clouse. She preceded him in death on August 5, 2003.

He was a member of Canby Masonic Lodge # 520 of St. Petersburg and the Sligo Sportsman’s Club. He was an avid hunter, arrowhead collector and poker player.

He had previously attended the Sligo Methodist Church.

Survivors include his daughter, Marjorie Wise and her husband, James H. Wise, of Knox and his granddaughter, Julie Wise-Brouckaert and her husband, Graham, of Washington, DC.

In addition to his parents and wife, Arthur was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Ralph and sisters, Grace and Elnora.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 pm Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at the William N. Rupert Mortuary, Inc., 430 Mendenhall Avenue, Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 am Thursday, July 18, 2013, in the funeral home with Reverend Chris Lewis officiating.

Interment will follow in the Callensburg Cemetery.

Donald Philip Murphy

Donald Philip Murphy, 82, passed away April 12, 2013, at a Bangor health care facility. He lived happily in Bangor most of his life. He was born April 10, 1931, in a family farmhouse in Knox, Pa., the son of Anne Hutchinson and John Murphy.

They later moved to Oil City, Pa., where Don grew up with his brothers and a sister. He married Bertrand Stinson, who predeceased him. Later in life, Don and Joan A. Durgan Murphy were married for over 10 happy years. They shared Joan’s family of children, Robert E. and Terri Durgan and two grandchildren, Lindsey F. Durgan and Emilie R. Durgan and the two families of Linda Durgan Medeiros and Ken Durgan. Along with his stepchildren and grandchildren, Nancy Moore and Pauline Quellette, his dear friends and their families, shared a loving and special place in his life.

Grace United Methodist Church, Bangor, was his church family home where he actively served for over 40 years. Don served in the U.S. Air Force for over 20 years, on Air Force bases around the United States and Asia. After his military retirement he worked another 16 and a half years in Stewart Common at the University of Maine, Orono, retiring in 1987, but not from his amazing cooking. Don was a huge Red Sox Fan and hardly missed listening or watching a game in over 35 years of play. He was an avid bowler who bowled five times a week and founded a tournament or two over the years. His dog, Angel, kept him entertained for 12 years. He moved to Maine Veteran’s Home, Bangor, in 2012. He is remembered fondly for his faith in God, love of his family and friends, kindness to all, generosity, attention to detail and organization, and thoughtfulness.

Jean (Barnes) Delo

Jean Delo (nee Barnes) of Keystone Heights, Florida, died on July 15, 2013 in Falls Church, Va. She was 86. Jean was born in Barnes, Pa. on November 17, 1926 and is preceded in death by her parents Roy and Leda Caughey Barnes and her brother Jack Barnes.

Jean grew up in Erie, Pa. and attended Millcreek High School. She met and married Ray Delo when they both were employed at the General Telephone Company. Their careers led them briefly to California, and also to Oil City, Pa., Marion, Ohio, and York, Pa. Her three sons all graduated college and settled into their careers with their families. Mike (Vicki) lives in Marlton, N.J. while Jerry (Ann) and Jeff (Donna) both reside in Arlington, Va.

Jean felt the pull of history and family tradition when in 1994 she moved to Keystone Heights. In the 1920s her father had worked to help layout the town and later her mother and father met and were married there. She treasured the golf course that had been surveyed by her father and she eventually had two different homes built adjacent to the golf course.Jean joined Community Church, where her grandfather Edwin Caughey had been a charter member and her aunt Elizabeth Caughey had worshipped in the 70′s and 80′s.

Jean’s retirement years were richly enjoyed and shared with many close friends. Her days were spent caring for her home and giving back to her community and her friends who she loved dearly. She was a dedicated volunteer who worked tirelessly for her churches and the Lake Area Ministries food bank (LAM). She also enjoyed playing bridge and golf and was a member of the Keystone Heights Golf and Country Club. Jean became an ardent and knowledgeable fan of the Florida Gators sports teams (much to the chagrin of her Nittany Lion sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren). She loved listening to music, especially the Gaithers Vocal Band, Jones Radio and the music at Trinity Baptist Church in Keystone Heights where she found her most recent church home and became a member in 2011.

Besides her parents and brother, Jean is preceded in death by her grandson Michael, her brother-in-law Chuck Grappy, her stepmother Edith (Griffey) Barnes, her nephew David, and her ex-husband Ray.

Along with her sons and daughters-in-law, Jean is survived by her grandchildren Kristin Delo (Dan) of Berkeley, California, Christine Lydic (Kevin) of Marlton, N.J., and Devin and Katie Delo of Arlington, Va. She is also survived by her sister, Betty Grappy and nephew, Steve Grappy, from Erie, Pa., sister-in-law, Fran Barnes of Chanhassen, Minnesota, nieces Dee, Janice, Colleen, and Kathleen also of Minnesota and their children and grandchildren.

Jean moved to Virginia on Memorial Day, 2013 to be closer to her three sons and grandchildren. She spent a particularly joyous day with her extended family on June 1, at the wedding of her oldest grandchild, Kristin. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Baptist Church on a date yet to be determined followed by interment at Keystone Heights Cemetery. Wearne B. Cook, Jr.

Wearne B. Cook, Jr., 69, of 111 High Street Cooperstown, died Wednesday morning July 17, 2013, at his residence.

Wearne was born on November 12, 1943, at Pleasantville, PA, a son of Mary Slater Cook Hollabaugh and the late Wearne B. Cook, Sr.

He was married to Pearl Shoemaker on July 7, 1962, in Titusville, PA.

He was a graduate of Oil City High School, class of 1961. He had owned and operated Cook’s Garage in Sunville since 1974. He had previously been employed at Sanford Equipment in Titusville, Drelick Motors in Oil City, Denton Lepley Garage and Moyer Equipment, both in Cooperstown.

Wearne currently served as fire chief of the Chapmanville Volunteer Fire Dept. and was former fire chief of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Lucky 13 CB Club in Hannaville. He raced his own stock car at Tri City Speedway from 1973 until 1978. He enjoyed hunting and going to flea markets.

Wearne is survived by his wife of Cooperstown; his mother of Titusville; a son, Wearne Francis Cook of Cooperstown; two daughters, Dorothy Ross and husband Gary of Sinking Spring, PA and Annette Corey of Saluda, SC; four grandchildren, Jim Ross and wife Dannette, Jeff Ross and wife Melissa, Trisha Zenker and husband Kevin, and Jonathan Ledford; three great grandchildren, Quest, Zac, and Riley Ross; two brothers, Dale Cook and wife Sue of Centerville and Carl Cook and wife Debbie of Silver Creek, NY; five sisters, Mary Jane Dittman of Emlenton, Anna Mae Rodgers and husband Steve of Oil City, Karen Ohl and husband Joe of Titusville, Esther Seeley and husband Ken of Meadville, and Ethel Macormac and husband Bob of Titusville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laura McCauley.

Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and attend the funeral service there on Saturday at 2:00 PM with Pastor Glen Van Cise of the Chapmanville Community Church, and Pastor Terry Brown of the Diamond United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunville Cemetery.

Bert Samuels

Bert Samuels of Oil City passed quietly in his sleep Wednesday night.

He was born Jan 11, 1917 in Detroit, Michigan, as the son of Adolf and Ida (Krow) Samuels and spent his developmental years in the McKeesport and Pittsburgh Areas until joining the Army Air Corps during WWII where he became a staff sergeant aircraft mechanic.

During the war he was introduced to Shiphrah Magdovitz (deceased) and they wed in 1946 and shortly thereafter moved to Oil City.

He was a traveling salesman in the clothing industry, and also was the manager of Mogilowitz’s clothing store.  After his regular retirement he worked with his son, Allen, who owned Sam Magdovitz & Co.

Bert was very active in the leadership and congregation of the Tree of Life Synagogue, former President of the local Bnai Brith chapter, and former Commander of the Carnick/Cohen/Magdovitz chapter of the Jewish War Veterans.

He had been also been a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, and a member of American Legion and Moose Club.

At the age of 82 he joined the “Over-55″ softball league, becoming the oldest man to ever join the league.

In recent years he was active in the Silver Sneakers program at the YMCA and an avid participant in the McDonald’s morning gentlemen’s gathering group.  Bert was very easy going and known for being a very likeable, sincerely caring individual; it will impossible to find anyone who knew him who didn’t like him.

He is survived by his younger son Allen who lived with him in the original family homestead that he purchased in 1952 and by his older son Sam (wife Judith); three granddaughters, Rachael, Nicole, and Abigail; two step grandsons, Yitchak and Daniel; a stepdaughter, Rus and her husband Ariel; and six great grandchildren.

He also leaves behind an extended family that will miss him greatly, including many nieces, nephews and their families and last, but certainly not least, his very special companion dog Rocky who will be the equivalent of 105 years old in August.

Funeral services will be held in the Morrison Funeral Home at 12 noon Friday.

Interment will follow at the Tree of Life Cemetery in Titusville.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Humane Society or American Legion.

Arlene Mae Adams

Arlene Mae Adams, 89, of Bela, PA, passed away Thursday, July 18, 2013, at her daughter’s home surrounded by her family.

She was born on May 15, 1924 in Toby Twp., Clarion Co., the daughter of George and Bertha (Crispen) Fair.

Arlene lived in the area all her life and attended Independence Elementary School and Union High School of Rimersburg. She was the last member of Wesleyan Methodist Church of Dutch Hill. Arlene was employed with the Clarview Nursing Home for 10 years working in both the kitchen and as a nurse’s aide.

In addition to being a loving wife and mother, Arlene enjoyed crocheting, crafts, reading and working in her flower beds. She was tireless by nature, and knew the value of hard work as she took in laundry and performed spring cleaning for her neighbors before starting her day at the nursing home. Arlene was an accomplished cook and baker, who could warm any heart with her chicken and noodles and German chocolate cake. She will be forever remembered in the hearts of those she touched during her lifetime.

She will be deeply missed by her sons, Daniel R. Adams and wife, Lola, of West Point, VA, Dennis R. Adams and wife, Anne, of Knox, PA; daughters, D. Elaine Walker, of Greenville, PA, and Marjorie “Margie” L. Custer and husband, Terry, of Parker, PA; 13 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, 9 step great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter expected in August.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of 53 years, Richard E. Adams, who passed away July 18, 1996; brother, Ford L. Fair; sister, Louise O. Ashbaugh; and great-grandchild, Samuel Richard Adams.

Relatives and friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 PM on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the Bauer-Hillis Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 758 Main Street, Rimersburg, PA. Additional visitation will be held from 9:30 AM until the time of funeral services at 10:30 AM on Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Cedarview Memorial Park, Strattanville, PA.

Wearne B. Cook, Jr., 69, of 111 High Street Cooperstown, died Wednesday morning July 17, 2013 at his residence.

Wearne was born on November 12, 1943 at Pleasantville, PA, a son of Mary Slater Cook Hollabaugh and the late Wearne B. Cook, Sr. He was married to Pearl Shoemaker on July 7, 1962 in Titusville, PA.

He was a graduate of Oil City High School, class of 1961. He had owned and operated Cook’s Garage in Sunville since 1974. He had previously been employed at Sanford Equipment in Titusville, Drelick Motors in Oil City, Denton Lepley Garage and Moyer Equipment, both in Cooperstown.

Wearne currently served as fire chief of the Chapmanville Volunteer Fire Dept. and was former fire chief of the Cooperstown Volunteer Fire Dept. He was a member of the Lucky 13 CB Club in Hannaville. He raced his own stock car at Tri City Speedway from 1973 until 1978. He enjoyed hunting and going to flea markets.

Wearne is survived by his wife of Cooperstown; his mother of Titusville; a son, Wearne Francis Cook of Cooperstown; two daughters, Dorothy Ross and husband Gary of Sinking Spring, PA and Annette Corey of Saluda, SC; four grandchildren, Jim Ross and wife Dannette, Jeff Ross and wife Melissa, Trisha Zenker and husband Kevin, and Jonathan Ledford; three great grandchildren, Quest, Zac, and Riley Ross; two brothers, Dale Cook and wife Sue of Centerville and Carl Cook and wife Debbie of Silver Creek, NY; five sisters, Mary Jane Dittman of Emlenton, Anna Mae Rodgers and husband Steve of Oil City, Karen Ohl and husband Joe of Titusville, Esther Seeley and husband Ken of Meadville, and Ethel Macormac and husband Bob of Titusville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Laura McCauley.

Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St. Titusville on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and attend the funeral service there on Saturday at 2:00 PM with Pastor Glen Van Cise of the Chapmanville Community Church, and Pastor Terry Brown of the Diamond United Methodist Church, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunville Cemetery.

Mrs. Arlene S. Hall, 96, formerly of Titusville and residing with her daughter in Forestville, NY passed away with her family by her side at 9:34 AM on Wednesday, July 17, 2013, at her daughter’s home.

Mrs. Hall was born on August 28, 1916, in Titusville to the late Ernest and Emma Clark Staub. She married Morris L. Hall on November 22, 1939 at the former St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Titusville. Mr. Hall preceded her in death on March 26, 1996.

She was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1934.

Arlene was part owner of the Townhouse Restaurant in Titusville and shortly after went to work for Thompson’s Drug Store as a clerk and cashier. She was employed for 50 years with the store until her retirement at age 85.

Mrs. Hall was a loving mother with a kind heart. She enjoyed traveling, was an excellent cook and baker. When her grandson was returning home from Iraq she took great pleasure going to Ft. Stewart, GA to welcome him home along with all the other soldiers.

Arlene is survived by two children, Karen Taylor and her husband Warren “Skip” of Forestville, NY, Richard Hall and wife Caroline of Sugarland, TX; five grandchildren, Sue Britt, Heather Fort and husband Jamie, Jeff Dunkleman and wife Sam, Shannon Hanley and husband Jason, Sharon Gehbauer and husband Keith; 11 grandchildren, 1 great great-grandchild; and close friends, Sue Fry, Jennifer Fry, and Barbara Schneider.

She was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Ernest, Herbert, Donald and Paul Staub; and a sister, Ruth Staub.

Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and attend the funeral service from the funeral home on Monday at 11:00 AM with retired Baptist minister Pastor Gary Kinnear and Warren “Skip” Taylor her son-in-law, officiating.

Interment will be in Sunnyside Cemetery, Centerville.

Ronald Kahle Hook

Ronald Kahle Hook, age 87, of Knox, passed away at 11:23 a.m. Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at UPMC Northwest at Seneca following a brief illness.

Born June 27, 1926, in Knox, he was a son of the late Henry and Edna Amsler Hook.

He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He served with the 87th Infantry Division, Golden Acorn Division, seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged on October 4, 1944. He was the recipient of the Occupation Medal (Germany), Meritorious Unit Award, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Ribbon.

Ron married the former Virginia Mae Switzer on April 17, 1948 in Knox. The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this past April.

He was employed at Oesterling Feed Store in Knox, the A & P in Clarion and retired from Knox Glass in 1986.

Ron was an avid Pittsburgh Pirates fan and truly enjoyed the Gaithers television show and listening to his gospel CD’s.

He was a member the American Legion Post #720 and the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Knox.

Ron always looked forward to serving at the Mother & Daughter Banquet at the church and his Sunday morning duty of assisting members with wheelchair access.

He took great pleasure in helping anyone in any way that he could and enjoyed just sitting on the porch, waiving to friends and neighbors as they drove by.

Ron was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Nothing pleased him more than spending time with his family.

In addition to his loving wife, Gin, Ron is survived by four daughters: Carol Chelton and her husband, Dan, of Dunkirk, New York; Deborah Miller and her husband, Jim; Betty Hook and Kristi Hook, all of Knox and Kristi’s fiancé, Chuck Amato; One son: Ronald Ray Hook, also of Knox.

Ron is also survived by five grandchildren: Erica Richerson and her husband, Troy; Jayme Baumcratz and Bradley, Matthew and Andrew Ditz; three great grandchildren: Caleb and Daniel Baumcratz and Shea Richerson; one sister-in-law, Bernice Hook, wife of LaMont and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers: LaMont and John Hook; a sister, Sara Louise Dittman; brother-in-law, Edward Dittman and a sister-in-law, Vivian Hook.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held for family and friends at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 1051 Twin Church Road, Knox, with Reverend Karen Parsh, pastor at St. Paul’s, officiating over the service.

Marilyn E. Peterson, 68, of Oil City, formerly of Rockland, died unexpectedly at 10:06 p.m. Tuesday , July 16, 2013 shortly after her arrival to the emergency room at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Born in Rockland on November 27, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Iva Confer Beach.

Mrs. Peterson was a homemaker and enjoyed going fishing and spending time with her family.

She was married on May 20, 1967 to David L. Peterson, and he preceded her in death on January 6, 1995.

Surviving are two children, Julia A. Bair and husband Duane of Townville and Raymond Peterson and his fiancé Kara Smith of Oil City; six brothers, Albert, John, Michael, Ernest, Richard, and Kenneth Beach, all of Oil City; six sisters, Sharon Whitton, Laurie Beach, Janice Rose, and Nancy Beach, all of Oil City, Janet Peterson of Grand Valley, and Blanche Beach of New York; two granddaughters, Kristi Bair of Youngstown, Ohio, and Amanda Bair of Townville; and two step-granddaughters, Christina and Savana Smith of Oil City. Also surviving are the following nieces and nephews and their families: Jeannie, Jim, Arlena, Tracy, Shelly, Victoria, Matthew, Ernest N., Ernest, Alicia, Crystal, Tammy, Amber, Jennifer, Carl, Missy, Chrissy, Karen, Richard, Jr., Ryan, Kathy, Marcy, Greg, Edgar, Jr., Iva, Raymond, Jr., Tammy Boden, Brenda, Loretta, Albert, Jr., Kenny, Chad, and Johnny.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David Leroy Peterson, Jr., two brothers, Norman and Carl Beach; and a nephew, Jerry Whitton.

Visitation for friends and family will be held Friday (July 19th) from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township. A funeral service will follow from the funeral home Friday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Leroy Learn, pastor of the Titusville Christian Missionary Alliance Church, officiating.

Interment will follow in Rockland Cemetery.

Janet A. Preston, 72 of East Brady died Wednesday July 17, 2013 at Butler Memorial Hospital.

Born May 1, 1941 in Petrolia, she was the daughter of Stanley W. “Tucker” and Isabelle (Wenner) Simpson.

Janet graduated from Fariview/Karns City High School in 1959 and Grove City College in 1963 with a degree in Business Administration. She taught business for 2 years at Brookville High School and then for 33 years with the Armstrong County School District. Most of those years were spent teaching at East Brady High School.

Janet enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, reading, traveling, bowling and golf. She was a member at St. Jude Golf Club in Chicora for many years and was especially proud of her Hole-in-One on #4. Janet was also the golf coach at East Brady High School for 8 years, leading the Bulldogs to their only league championship.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in East Brady where she served on the church session and was a past elder. She also was a member of the Stewardship Committee.

Janet is survived by one son Patrick Preston and his wife Pamela of East Brady. 1 Grandson Tucker Preston and 1 granddaughter Shanel Preston both of East Brady. 1 Brother James Simpson and wife Inez of Chicora, 1 Sister Diana Steffan of Butler.
She is also survived by 3 nephews, Steve Simpson, Tray and Quay Steffan, and her companion Dick Preston of Chicora.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Ronald “Hummer” Preston, and 1 brother in law Donald Steffan.

Friends of Janet A. Preston will be received 2-4, 6-8pm Sunday July 21, 2013 at the Charles B. Buechele Funeral Home 105 4th Street East Brady, PA 16028

Funeral services will be held 11am Monday July 22, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, East Brady with Rev. Raymond Eichler officiating.

Mr. Mark Silas Harvey, Jr., 81, of 45991 Keyes Rd., Titusville died at 6:00 AM, Friday, July 19, 2013, at his residence.

Mr. Harvey was born on August 12, 1932, in Titusville to the late Mark S. Harvey, Sr., and Vivian Clark Harvey.

He married Virginia Elder on January 10, 1953, in Corry.

He was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1950.

Mr. Harvey served in the US Air Force. He entered the service on Dec. 29, 1950 in Erie and was honorably discharged on August 4, 1954, at Camp Kilmer, NJ, with the rank of Private. While in the Air Force, Mr. Harvey played on the football team and had the distinction of playing the first football game in Wembley Stadium in London, England. The team also played games all across Europe.

He was formerly employed at Cyclops Specialty Steel Corp before going to work for Turben Auto Sales and Service in Corry. In 1966, he built and opened Corry Chrysler, Dodge & Jeep and ran the business for 32 years and retired in 1988 after the sale of the business.

Mr. Harvey was a member of the White Oak United Methodist Church in Titusville, B.P.O Elks Lodge #264, Bruce Shorts Post #5958 VFW, and the Corry Masonic Lodge.

He and Virginia wintered for 12 years at Lake Secession, SC. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, and showed Arabian horses for many years.

Mr. Harvey is survived by his wife Virginia Harvey of Titusville; three children, Denise Ladd of Apache Junction, AZ, Michael Harvey and wife Stace of Pleasantville, Sondra Wilson and husband Ron of North East; 8 grandchildren, Jesse Ladd of AZ, Ginny Mae Riggins of AZ, Emma Kate Riggins of AZ, Cody Hunter of Pittsburgh, Parker Harvey and Cole Harvey of Pleasantville, Anna Sveda and Kaylin Sveda of North East; a great grandson, Christopher Ladd of AZ; one brother, William Harvey and wife Loretta of Hamilton, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his twin daughters, Raschele Harvey who died in infancy and Mischele Riggins; two brothers, Ronald Harvey and Wayne Harvey; and a sister, Winifred Harvey.

Friends will be received at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home 303 N. Washington St., Titusville from 1:00 to 2:00 PM on Monday with a memorial service to follow conducted by Rev. Jerry Gray, pastor of the White Oak and Bethel United Methodist Churches, officiating.
