Cathy Lee Fry

Cathy Lee Fry, 65, of 41467 Water Street Hydetown, died Friday morning July 19, 2013 at the Titusville Area Hospital following an extended illness.

Cathy was born on July 12, 1948, in Oil City, a daughter of the late Edward and Ruth Shingledecker Stewart. She was married to James E. Fry on Aug. 30, 1969 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Oil City.

Cathy was a graduate of Cranberry High School, class of 1966. She had been employed as secretary at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church in Titusville for 23 years. She had previously been employed at the former Pennbank in Titusville for several years.

Cathy was a member of the Titusville First United Methodist Church. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, and her favorite flowers were lilacs.

Cathy is survived by her husband of Hydetown; three sons, Michael Fry and his wife Danielle of Washington, DC, David Fry of Hydetown, and John Fry of Luray, VA; three grandchildren, Donovan, Alexis, and Carly; six sisters, Susan Stover and husband Lewis of Venus, Betsy Stewart of Jacksonville, FL, Peggy Harrison and husband Tom of Ross Common, MI, Joyce Chambers and husband Jerry, and Sharon McCauley and husband Denny, all of Oil City, and Nancy Reitz and husband Lee of Mayport; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no public calling hours. A private memorial service for the family will be conducted at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church Parish Hall.

The family asks that memorials be made to St. James Memorial Episcopal Church 112 E. Main Street Titusville, PA 16354.

Robert L. Harkless

Robert L. Harkless, 88, of Sligo, passed away Friday, July 19, 2013 at the Clarion Hospital.

Born June 1, 1925, in Callensburg, Bob was the son of Rowland C. Harkless and Welthy A. Baker Harkless.

Bob was married to Doris Haines Harkless, who preceded him in death in 1995.

After high school, Bob served in the Army. After returning, he worked for US Coragated Steel.

Bob was a member of the Canby Masonic Lodge 520 in St. Petersburg for over 50 years, and a member of the American Legion Post in Clarion. He loved playing the mandolin and the guitar and was an avid hunter and fly fisherman who enjoyed tying his own flies. Bob was an avid reader and loved watching the Pirates and the Steelers. He and his wife had a strong affection for their dogs and Bob had a deep love for the land he grew up on.

Bob is survived by a sister-in-law Rebecca Harkless of Callensburg, his niece Jane (Blake) Reed of Parker, his niece Kim (Dan) Myers of West Freedom , his nephew Craig Harkless of Essex, Mass, his nephew James (Mary) Harkless of Corsica, his niece Regina (Larry) Bowser of Callensburg, his niece Sheryl Dunstan of Allentown, and various other nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents and wife Bob was preceded in death by his two brothers James Harkless and Clair Harkless.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home, Inc., 504 E. Penn St., Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the funeral home with the Rev. Ken Hughes, officiating. Clarion American Legion Post 66 will perform military honors.

Interment will follow in Callensburg Cemetery in Callensburg.

William L. Wesner

William L. Wesner, 79, of Knox died Friday July 19, 2013 of a sudden illness while hiking in the Black Moshannon State Forest.

Born August 20, 1933, in Wellsvile NY, he was the son of the late Wayne and Roberta (Lain) Wesner.

William was a graduate of Keystone High School and the Clarion University. He then went on to work for the Pennsylvania Department of Environment Protection for 36 years. William was a member of the North Country Trail Association and the Scrubgrass Creek Watershed Association.

On August 27, 1977 William married Dorothy Timmis and she survives.

Along with his wife William is survived by three children Vincent W. Wesner of Rochester NY, Patricia W. Rex of Shippenville, PA, John H. Wesner of Mt Dora, FL, a sister Molly w. Courson of Clarion, two brothers in law Harold E. Timmis of Pauline, SC, John Timmis of Waynesburg, PA, and two sisters in law Wanda T. Shadle of Gainsville, GA, and Rebecca T. Breidinger of Huston TX. Also surviving are nephews Timothy Courson and Jeffery Courson both of Clarion, four grandchildren John Alden Wesner, Vanessa W. Kelly, D. Mitchell Rex, Michelle Gibson, several other nieces and nephews and nine great-grandchildren.

Along with his parents William was preceded in death by three brothers in law Robert Courson, Robert Henc, Howard Breidinger and two sisters in law Janet Henc and Jessie Timmis.

A private memorial service will be held by the family. The McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Clay A. George

Clay A. George, age 50, of Knox, died Saturday afternoon, July 20, 2013 at UPMC Northwest at Seneca following a lengthy illness.

Born March 11, 1963 in Baltimore, Maryland, he is a son of Fay H. Henry George of Knox and the late Dean B. George.

In addition to his mother, Clay is survived by five brothers: Dean George and his wife, Maureen, of Huntington, New York; Craig George and his wife, Ronnie, of Bayshore, Long Island, New York; Neal George and his wife, Liza, of Hingham, Massachusetts; Bruce George of Knox and Grant George and his wife, Karen, of Lakeland, Florida; one sister: Gail George of Knox and nieces and nephews: Kyle, Sean, Mellina, Claude, Jason, Jared, Graham, Alec, Meghan, Parker and Clay’s surrogate daughter, Liz.

There will be no calling hours.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and time and date will be announced as soon as available.

Interment will take place in the Monroe Community Cemetery, Monroe Township, Clarion County.

Memorial contributions may be given in the name of Clay A. George to the Knox Public Library, P.O. Box 510, Knox, PA 16232.

Sandra M. Linnon, 80, of 315 West Walnut St. Titusville, passed away Sunday morning, July 21, 2013 in her home with family by her side.

She was born on August 19, 1932 in Warren, PA, the daughter of the late George and Mary Sevastos Mavrelis. She was married to James M. Linnon on October 22, 1955 in Bryn Mawr, PA. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1984. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister Neove Chain and a brother, Byron Mavrelis.

Sandra was a graduate of the Warren High School, class of 1950.

She was a volunteer with the Titusville Garden Club, Titusville Service League, Titusville Area Renaissance and the YWCA Book Club. She enjoyed golfing, playing bridge and most importantly her family and home.

Sandy is survived by her five children: Pamela Frank of Westfield, NY; Diane Popieski and husband Tom of Umatilla, FL; Kathryn Linnon of Canadohta Lake; Scott Linnon of Franklin and Nancy Linnon and husband Jesse Vladimirov of Portland, OR.; 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and a sister, Doris Stevens of San Marino, CA.

No public calling hours will be observed. Friends may attend a memorial service at St. James Memorial Episcopal Church on Thursday, July 25, at 11:00 am. A luncheon will follow.

Interment will be later at Woodlawn Cemetery with the immediate family.

Alvera E. Burns, 79, of Rt. 322 Brookville, Pa. (Roseville), died on Thursday, July 18, 2013, at Armstrong Co. Memorial Hospital.

Born on January 27, 1934, in Punxsutawney, Pa., she was the daughter of Charles Cameron Burkett and Emma Marcella Himes Burkett.

Alvera was married on April 4, 1953, in Punxsutawney, Pa., to Herbert B. Burns, who survives.

She worked for Sylvania in Brookville, Pa. and as a packer of Owen-Illinios Glass Plant in Brookville, Pa.

She was a member of the Liberty St. Church of God in Clarion, Pa., and was active in church affairs, and she loved her family,

In addition to her husband, Herbert, she is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Willoughby (James) of Zelienople, Pa., and a son, Donald Burns (Lanea) of Knox, Pa.

She is also survived by four sisters, Agnes Burns of Brookville, Pa.; Isabelle Hetrick of Brookville, Pa.; Marion McKendree of Brookville, Pa.; and Elva Crosswaite of Reynoldsville, Pa.; and two brothers, Nelson Burkett of Brookville, Pa.; and Ken Burkett of Findley Lake, NY.; and four grandchildren, Benjamin Willoughby, Rachel Willoughby, Jennifer Burns, and Emily Burns.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Deborah Lynn Burns; and two brothers, Elvin Burkett and Albert Burkett.

Visitation hours are on Friday, July 19, 2013, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM at McKinney Funeral Home, 345 Main Street, Brookville, PA, and Saturday, July 20, 2013, from 10 AM to 11 AM at the Liberty St. Church of God, Clarion, Pa.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at Liberty St. Church of God, Clarion, Pa. with Pastor Bruce Wilson officiating.

Interment will be at Coolspring Cemetery in Oliver Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.

Hazel Gay Gross Casto, 84, of Franklin, PA died Thursday July 18, 2013, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital at Pittsburgh, PA after a sudden illness.

She was born March 2, 1929, in Sutton, WV to the late Orpha Hue and Delpha Gay Jenkins Gross.

Hazel was retired with J.C. Penney Department Stores as a Secretary, She worshipped at Grace United Methodist Church for 60 years in Franklin, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and husband; Rubel Ray Casto.

Surviving Hazel are her loving siblings; Johnie Gross and wife Diane , Kennieth Leon Gross, Jerry Gross and wife Pam, all of Sutton, Jimmy Gross and wife Arthela of Gassaway, Margie Best of Franklin, PA, Mildred Casto, Mary Mace, Louise Cline and husband Danny, Olive Fishbaugh and husband William all of Sutton and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Greene-Robertson Funeral Home, Sutton with Rev. Bill Hopkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Barnett Cemetery, near Sutton. Friends may call Sunday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Richard “Shef” Shefchunas

Richard “Shef” Shefchunas, 70, of Youngsville, NC, died Sunday, July 21, 2013. He has been taken into the loving arms of Jesus after an unexpected illness.

Born in Oil City, PA on February 26, 1943, he was the son of the late Joe and Stella Shefchunas.

He graduated from Oil City high school and served six years in the US Army Reserves. As a teen, Shef began working as a packer for PennTraffic-Riverside market. During his 47 year career with PennTraffic, he worked his way up to produce clerk, produce manager, regional supervisor and vice president of perishable operations. He made his career in produce and the grocery business, liked working with plants and always had a garden. He married Kathy, the love of his life, on June 19, 1971. Shef and Kathy have four children: son Steven and daughters Julie, Terri and Linda and the couple recently celebrated 42 years of marriage.

A devout Catholic, he attended St. Catherine’s of Sienna church and put his faith into practice through his patience and kindness toward others. Shef was known for his friendly, easy-going personality and good sense of humor. He was a hard worker with a strong love of family. Shef enjoyed travel and had visited Germany, England, France, Mexico, Scotland, Denmark, Chile, Costa Rica, Jamaica, the Bahamas and several trips to Arizona, Hawaii and California. Since he was a boy, Shef liked automobiles, including antique car shows and owned a 37 Chevy and 62 Impala. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Lithuanian Club of DuBois.

After retiring in 2007, he and wife Kathy moved to North Carolina where they made their home in Youngsville. While they liked taking trips and having family get-togethers, Shef and Kathy were also happy with little things like caring for their pets and going for ice cream.

Shef is survived by his wife Kathy of Youngsville; son Steven Shefchunas, daughter Julie and her husband Steve Buskirk and their daughter Madison, daughter Linda Rush, and daughter Terri Anastasi, all of Raleigh; as well as brother Tom and sister-in-law Sandy Shefchunas of Atlanta, GA; a sister-in-law Gayle and her husband Mike Morgado of Hanford, CA; four grandchildren, a great granddaughter, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and cousins.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Catherine’s of Sienna Catholic Church on Wednesday, July 24 at 11am with Father Tom Duggan officiating. Burial will be at Pine Forest Memorial Gardens in Wake Forest.

Shef’s life personified the Bible verse Matthew 5:9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Shef’s memory to Hospice of Wake County, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, NC 27607.

Ethel C. Anderson, 91, of Warren, PA passed away Sunday afternoon, July 21, 2013 at Warren Manor Nursing Home.

Born on December 22, 1921 in East Hickory, PA she was the daughter of the late Johnathan Elmer and Mary Herman Combs. On October 21, 1943 in East Hickory, PA she married Robert “Bob” Anderson, who died on September 15, 2003. Ethel was a resident of Warren for most of her life and was employed with the former Solar Electric making invasion tubes during World War II. She had also been employed with Sylvania and New Process Co. Ethel was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was a junior choir helper and was a member of the funeral luncheon committee. She was also a member of the Warren Women’s Christian Club, the Alaskan Children’s Circle and the Frewsburg (NY) American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. Ethel had been a member of the PTA and was a former Brownie and Girl Scout leader. She was known for her personality and for her heart of gold. She could strike up a conversation with anyone. Ethel loved her family and enjoyed her grandkids baseball games, cooking, baking, canning, gardening and loved visiting with neighbors and helping others.

Ethel is survived by three daughters, Gayle Toner of Warren, PA, Kimberley M. Hawley of Penfield, NY, Lynda (Randy) Grey of Frewsburg, NY, , and, seven grandchildren, William W. (Sandrita) Toner, II of Columbia, MD, Susan Toner Hoover of Erie, PA, Brandon M. Hawley, Mitchell Hawley, Pierce G. Hawley, all of Penfield, NY, Kyle A. Grey and Connor R. Grey, both of Frewsburg, NY, one great-grandson, Ronin Toner of Columbia, MD and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Ethel was preceded in death by three brothers, Jonathan Elmer Combs, William “Boots” F. Combs, John F. Combs, and four sisters, Mary Firster, Mabel Holtz, Nettie Jane Combs and Elizabeth Kingston. Friends may call from 2-4 P.M. and 6-8 P.M. Tuesday, July 24, 2013 at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., 304 East Street, Warren, PA using the rear entrances. John Allen Wilson

John Allen Wilson, 76, of Five Mile Run Rd. Brookville, Pa., passed away on Monday, July 22, 2013, at home.

Born on November 8, 1936, in Emporium, Pa., he was the son of John Thomas Wilson and Vivian Reed Wilson/

He was married on May 2, 1994, in Winchester, VA, to Monna Snyder, who survives.

John worked as a car mechanic for the Shawmut Railroad in Brookville, Pa. for 24 years, retiring in 1996.

He enjoyed hunting and tinkering. He especially enjoyed his family and was loved by all.

He is survived by two sons, William Allen Wilson (Ellen) of Orange Park, FLA, and Wayne Andrew Wilson (Ronda) of Corsica, Pa.; and two daughters, Christene Ann Wilson Bland of Middleburg, FLA, and Kim Means (Jake) of Brookville, Pa.

He is also survived by a sister, Faye Wilson Dalglish of Roanoke, VA; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

He was precedd in death by his parents and a brother Bernard “Bernie” Wilson.

Private services were held by the family.

Interment will be at Riggs Cemetery in Warsaw Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.

Isabelle J. Peterson

Isabelle J. Peterson, 93, a lifelong resident of Foxburg, died Saturday morning, July 20, 2013, at the Parker Personal Care Home in Parker, PA.

Born on June 26, 1920 in Foxburg, Isabelle was the daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Stubble.

Isabelle was married to William Robert Peterson, originally from Knox, PA, on August 21, 1940. They were married for over 63 years until his death on March 31, 2004.

Isabelle was a housewife, dedicating her life to her family, home and community. She graduated from the Foxburg/St. Petersburg Richland Township High School. She was a member of the Memorial Church of Our Father Episcopal Church in Foxburg and the auxiliary to the American Legion Post #636. She was an avid golfer and for many years belonged to the Foxburg Country Club. Isabelle enjoyed walking, bowling, cooking and gardening as well as entertaining family and friends. Before her death, she donated the family antique bell collection to the Clarion County Historical Society.

Surviving her is her son, William C. Peterson and his wife, Carmen, of Gaithersburg, Maryland; a granddaughter, Erin (Peterson) Hou and her husband, Chien, of New York City, a grandson, Kyle Peterson, of Bloomington, Minnesota, and a great grandson, Joaquin Hou.

In addition to her parents, Isabelle was preceded in death by her husband, William; two brothers, Claude and Robert Stubble, and three sisters, Mary Genevieve Sherry, Maude Stull, and Naomi Jean Jones

Friends and family will be received at the Hile Funeral Home Inc., 802 Grove St., St. Petersburg, from 5 – 8 p.m. Friday, July 26. A funeral service will be held Saturday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Robert Pascoe, Chaplain of Amedisys Hospice, officiating. Interment will follow at the Foxburg Cemetery. Nellie “Sox” Mae Reed

Nellie “Sox” Mae Reed, age 60 of Reed Rd, Clarion passed away July 21, 2013 at the Clarion Hospital after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Born September 16, 1952 at Brookville Hospital, she was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Mary Lois Fryery Miller. Nellie attended school at Clarion Limestone School District. She was married to Mark Douglas Reed on September 11, 1969 and he preceded her in death on February 2, 2012.

Nellie worked as a cook at Johnny Garneau’s near Clarion for a number of years before going to work as a custodian for Clarion Area School District. She retired from the school district in January of this year.

Nellie enjoyed sewing, making crafts, playing cards, gardening, shopping and playing badminton. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family.

She is survived by a daughter Gloria and her husband Daniel Lambing of Clarion. Sisters, Betty Anderson of Knox, Mary Oglesby of North Carolina and Sue Nestor of Maryland, Grandchildren, Mark Lambing of Clarion, who affectionately called her Babba, Joel Lee Best Jr of Clarion, Amanda Ion of New York, John and Heather Boback of Ford City. A brother in law Leslie Reed Jr and his wife Lori of Strattanville along with numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter Jill Diane Eselman, nephews James Anderson, John Lockwood, Cody Lockwood, a brother in law, Carl McClain and a special sister in law Bernice McClain.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2-4, 7-9 at the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood St, Clarion, PA. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 AM from the funeral home with Marsha Mahle of the Miola Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment will follow in the Miola Cemetery.

Margaret M. Davison, formerly of Hillcrest Avenue, Polk, died July 18, 2013 at Lake Prince Woods Retirement Community, Suffolk, VA.

Margaret was born in Worth Township, PA on September 21, 1918.

She was the daughter of the late Vernon P. and Ida Mae (Jamison) Brooks.

She was married September 6, 1955 to James Everett Davison who preceded her in death.

Margaret retired from Polk Center where she worked in the laundry.

She was a former member of Polk Presbyterian Church.

Margaret enjoyed reading, caring for house plants, crossword puzzles, animals, and traveling.

Survivors include her daughter Diane Uliana, son-in-law Thomas Uliana, and grandsons Ian Uliana and Andrew Uliana, all of Chesapeake, Virginia; sister-in-laws Betty Brooks of Franklin, Nancy Brooks of Franklin, Jean Davison of Titusville, and Opal Maloney of Meadville as well as a cousin Florence Dahl and her husband Carl of Corry, and many very special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and brothers Gaylord W. Brooks, Vernon “Sparky” Brooks, and Wayne C. Brooks, niece Patricia Baldwin, and nephew Gregory Brooks.

On behalf of Margaret, her family would like to thank everyone who generously helped her during her retirement years, especially Jean Davison, her nieces and nephews and their families and her neighbors the Adam’s; and more recently Heartland Hospice and the nurses and staff at Lake Prince Woods.

A graveside service will be held at Noon on Thursday at Sunset Hills Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Diane Whitman, Pastor of Polk Presbyterian Church, Officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of choice.

Philip E. Johnson, 90, a resident of The Caring Place in Franklin, formerly of Seneca, died early Monday morning, July 22, 2013 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Born November 18, 1922 in Seneca, he was the son of the late Frank and Viola (Faeger) Johnson.

He was a graduate of Cranberry High School and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.

Phil was an active gardener, woodworker, and painter for many years at his home in Seneca. He was self-taught in carpentry, furniture building, bird carving, and oil painting. He was also an avid reader.

Mr. Johnson was employed for many years as an automobile mechanic at both the Weaver Chevrolet and Crivelli Chevrolet dealerships.

He was married in Oil City on August 10, 1946 to the former Theresa Burke.

Surviving is his wife of 66 years, Theresa, who resides at The Caring Place in Franklin; two sons, Robert Johnson and wife Kay of Eglon, West Virginia, and Steve Johnson and wife Patty of Erie; grandchildren include Philip, Anne Marie, Andrew, and Emily Johnson, all of Erie; and great-grandchildren Aivree, Kendyll, and Rowynn Johnson, all of Erie.

He is also survived by a sister, Jean Tantillo of Weymouth, Mass.; and several devoted nieces, nephews, and their families.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Johnson.

Friends and family are invited to attend a service to celebrate Phil’s life, which will be held Friday (July 26th) at 3:30 p.m. in the chapel of The Caring Place, 103 N. 13th Street in Franklin. The Rev. Linda Deeter, chaplain at The Caring Place, will officiate.

The family will then receive friends Friday evening (July 26th) from 7-9 p.m. in the Hile-Best Funeral Home, Inc., 2781 Rte. 257 in Seneca, Cranberry Township.

Phil’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the dedicated staff at The Caring Place for their concern and care for both Theresa and Phil.

Helen Therese Johnson nee Jensen

Helen Therese Johnson nee Jensen, 78, of Titusville, died peacefully at 8:05 p.m. Sunday, July 21, 2013, surrounded by her loving family at the Marquette Hospice House, Meadville.

Mrs. Johnson was born September 28, 1934 in New York, New York a daughter of the late Herman Jensen and Helena Kate Reynolds Jensen. She worked for many years for AT & T as a long distance operator. She also worked for Parade Publications as a switchboard operator and receptionist. Later she owned and operated Scandia Drycleaners in North Bergen, NJ. She and her family moved to Oil City in 1975 and to Titusville in 1982. Helen enjoyed poetry, reading, gardening, and socializing with her family and friends. Her wit, humor and story telling will be fondly missed and remembered by all.

Helen died two days before her 58th wedding anniversary to her husband Francis (Frank) Johnson, who survives in Titusville, whom she married July 23, 1955 in St. Brigid’s Church, Manhattan, New York; she will be sadly missed by her daughter Regina Marulli and her husband Daniel of Hillsborough, NJ; her son Francis Johnson of Clifton Park, NY; and her grandchildren Alyssa Grace Marulli of New York, NY and Daniel Francis Marulli of Glenside, PA.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Kathleen Marie Goodlet.

Relatives and friends of Helen will be received Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. at Leo N. Hennes Funeral Home, Inc., 203 E. Main St., Titusville where the funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday with Father Walter E. Packard, pastor for the Catholic Community of Titusville, officiating. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Oil City. The family suggests that memorial contributions can be made to Marquette Hospice House, c/o Hospice of Crawford County, 310 N. Sheila Barlow, 69, of Clarion, Pennsylvania passed away on July 23, 2013 in the comfort of her home surrounded by her loved ones.

Sheila was born to the late Henry and Elizabeth Barnable in Calvert, Newfoundland (NF), Canada. She was an islander at heart and introduced many a friend to the rugged, natural beauty of her Canadian home.

Foremost, Sheila was a beloved mother, wife, sister, daughter and friend to all in need. She touched many lives. She will be remembered for her compassion, spirit, and infectious laughter. She had a zeal for life and an adventurous spirit. She loved traveling, cooking, playing cards, skiing, and jokes.

After an eight year battle with Alzehimer’s, her body succumbed to the disease, but her unbreakable Spirit endured. She is our rock and will be forever.

Sheila was the consummate health care professional. After graduating from St. Clare’s Hospital’s School of Nursing in St. John’s, NF she started her career as a labor delivery nurse in St. John, New Brunswick, also then worked in Vancouver, British Columbia and Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. Later, Sheila returned to school and transitioned into teaching nursing.

She graduated from Clarion University’s first Bachelor of Science in Nursing class and continued her studies, completing a Master’s of Science in Nursing at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Doctorate of Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. She was an Associate Professor in the Nursing Department at Indiana University of Pennsylvania when she retired in 2003. In her professional capacity, she traveled and did research, but her first call was mentoring and nourishing her students whom she trained in local area hospitals.

She is survived by her husband, Arthur H. Barlow, children Maegon, Chris and his wife Joy Yan, and Shannon and her husband Mark Flanagan; grandchildren Morgan, Connor and Rowan, her sister Bernice Piche; brothers Wayne, Terry and James, her Uncle Stan and Aunt Frances, sister in law Mildred Gesualdo and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street, in Clarion, PA, where a visitation will be held Friday, July 26 from seven to nine PM.

A Mass will be held for Sheila at 11:00 am on Saturday at the Immaculate Conception Church on Main Street in Clarion with Fr. Monty Sayers as celebrant. The family is also planning a memorial service for Sheila in Ferryland, Newfoundland, the third week of August.

Judy C. Slaugenhoup, 69, of Strattanville, died Thursday, July 24, 2013, at the Golden Living Center in Clarion.

Born April 9, 1944 in Clarion; she was the daughter of Russell C. and Doris A. Baines Stromyer.

Judy was married on August 21, 1965 to Douglas A. Slaugenhoup, and he survives.

She retired from the Owens-Illinois Glass Plant of Clarion.

Judy was a member of the Cornerstone Church of Shippenville.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking, and flowers and gardening.

In addition her husband, she is survived by three sisters, Shirley Guth and her husband, Alfred, of Shippenville, Marie Bish of Shippenville, Donna Fascenmyer of Naples, FL; a brother, Larry Stromyer and his wife, Betty, of Tylersburg; a sister-in-law, Janice Lutz of Shippenville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Rodney Slaugenhoup; a daughter, Michelle Slaugenhoup; and three brothers-in-law, Leonard Bish, Lawrence Fascenmyer, and Edward Lutz.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013, at the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, 638 Wood Street, Clarion.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013, in the funeral home with Pastor John Green, pastor of the Cornerstone Church in Shippenville, officiating.

Interment will be held in the Cedarview Memorial Park in Strattanville.
