Helen Gourley

Helen Gourley, age 86, of Route 322 East, Clarion, died peacefully on Monday, February 3, 2014.

She was born on November 18, 1927 in Eddyville, Armstrong County, the daughter of Albert and Freda (Crissman) Doverspike.

She was married on August 5, 1948 to Norman Gourley. He preceded her in death on March 29, 2010. She spent over 60 years of her life with her husband and enjoyed being a homemaker and the mother of four children.

Helen is survived by her four children, Kenneth Gourley and his wife Susan of Baton Rouge, LA, Nanci Brown of Limestone PA, Betty “Jeannie” Allen and her husband Lenny of West Freedom PA, and Donna Cunningham and her husband John of Clarion; her seven grand-daughters, Christina Menville and her husband Keith of Baton Rouge LA, Staci Hill of New Castle PA, Amy Neiswonger of Vandergrift PA, Kelly Neiswonger and her companion Mark Neal of Vandergrift PA, Carrie Brown of Vandergrift PA, Tracy Bearfield and her husband Wayne of Callensburg PA, and Tonya Stewart and her husband Brian of Sligo PA; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Charles “Jake” Doverspike and his wife Shirley of Falconer NY; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family that have been a part of her life.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her step-brother, Clarence Troutman; her brother, Albert “George” Doverspike; and her sister, Shirley “Betty” Doverspike.

Arrangements are under the care of the Goble Funeral Home and Crematory, 330 Wood Street, Clarion where visitation will be held from 10-11am on Wednesday, February 5. Funeral services will follow immediately at 11:00am in the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Deryl K. Larsen, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedarview Memorial Park.

Olive (Effie) Wygant

Olive (Effie) Wygant, age 88, of Franklin, died Tuesday, February 4th, 2014 at the UPMC Northwest Medical Center.

Born March 1, 1925 in Butler, PA, she was the daughter of John and Pearl Stokes Hughes.

Mrs. Wygant was a graduate of Penn Township High School, Slippery Rock University and attended Penn State University for her graduate work.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees, AARP, a former President of The Franklin Woman’s Club. Her hobbies included golfing in the Sleepy Hollow Golf League, mowing the grass, horse races, going to the Casinos, and spending time with her grandchildren. She also helped restore the organ at the Venango Arts and Science Museum in Oil City.

Mrs. Wygant was the first girl’s Health and Physical Education teacher at Rocky Grove High School from 1946 to 1951. She returned to RGHS in 1963 and taught Mathematics until her retirement in 1983. Between 1951 and 1963, she worked as a substitute Physical Education Teacher at Franklin High School.

Surviving is a son; Peter E. Wygant and wife Billie Jo of Franklin, son-in-law; Philip Snowden of Glasgow, Scotland; a sister; Blanche Mitchell and husband James of Butler, PA; three grandchildren; Sarah Irwin and husband Erik of State College; Benjamin Wygant and wife Chandler of Buena Vista, CO, Kathryn McClintock and husband Nate of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents mentioned above; her husband, Max Manning Wygant whom she married August 19, 1950 and died on November 16, 1995; a daughter, Dr. Amy Snowden; two brothers; Carl and Donald Hughes; and a sister, Betty Shakley.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 7-9 on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin where funeral services will be held 11 am Friday. Burial will be made in the Franklin Cemetery.

Donna B. Hilliard, 84, of Hazen-Richardsville Rd. Brookville, Pa., passed away Monday February 3, 2014, at Jefferson Manor, Brookville, Pa.

She was born on June 13, 1929 in Reynoldsville, Pa., to Bruno Cattau and Icie Alderton Cattau.

She was married to Fred Hilliard, who survives, and worked various jobs for numerous factories and retail stores and cared for her crippled granddaughter Mindy Hilliard for 20 years.

She also was a member of the Warsaw Twp. Vol. Fire Dept. Ladies Aux.

Donna is survived by three Sons, Fred Hilliard of Elma, NY, William Hilliard of Olean, NY, and Donald Hilliard of DuBois, Pa., 11 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was the last remaining member of her immediate family, preceded in death by her parents, one Son, David Hilliard, one Granddaughter, Mindy Hilliard, four Sisters, and two Brothers.

Visitation hours will be Friday, February 7, 2014 9 AM to 11 AM at McKinney Funeral Home, and the service will be Friday, February 7, 2014, at 11:00 a.m.

Pastor Phil Conklin will officiate, with internment at Beechwoods Cemetery in Washington Twp., Jefferson Co., Pa.

Margaret F. Pastor Driscoll age 82 of Erie, passed away at her home on Tuesday February 4, 2014.

She was born in Franklin, PA on August 28, 1931 a daughter of the late Joseph and Margaret Andrews Pastor.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Margaret was a longtime and very active member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph A. Driscoll in 2006, two sisters, Josephine McIntyre and Frances Schick and one brother Vincent Pastor.

She is survived by two daughters, Anne Yoculin and her husband Paul of Erie and Marie Driscoll of Apex, North Carolina; five grandchildren, Emily Kinnear, Todd Kinnear, Samuel Kinnear, Rebekah Sonney and Alexis Yoculin; six great-grandchildren, Skyler, Mishcha, Sophie, Joseph, Ariana and Logan; five siblings, Mary Kleck and her husband Don, Joseph Pastor, John Pastor and his wife Dorothy, Rose Beveridge and her husband Neil and Frank

Pastor and his wife Carol and numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc. 5000 Wattsburg Rd. Erie, 16504 on Thursday from 2 to 4 PM and 6 to 8 PM, and are invited to a prayer service there on Friday morning at 9:15 AM followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Erie County Memorial Gardens.

Gordon E. Bickel, 75, of Bredinsburg Road, Franklin, Cranberry Township, passed away unexpectedly early Tuesday morning, February 4, 2014 at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Mr. Bickel was born in Oil City on December 22, 1938. He was the son of Hobart M. and Nellie Mae Culbertson Bickel.

Mr. Bickel was of the Christian faith. He was a longtime member of the Seneca Volunteer Fire Department, and an active member of the department’s fire police. He had served the fire department as Assistant Fire Chief and served the fire police as both a Captain and Lieutenant. Gordon was recently honored by the fire department for his 51 years of service.

He enjoyed playing the lottery, visiting casinos, traveling and being part of the “Coffee Club” at The Log Cabin Restaurant. He also enjoyed the company of his dog Leo. Mr. Bickel was employed for 27 years in the maintenance department at the Cranberry Area School District and retired in 2000. He owned and operated Bickel’s Mobil in Seneca. He had also been employed by Sealtest Foods as a truck driver. He was a 1957 graduate of Oil City High School and served in the US Army reserves from 1956 to 1962.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia F. Eiseman Bickel, whom he married at St. Michael Church in Fryburg on August 31, 1962. Also surviving are three children, Gordon E. Bickel II of Franklin, Marji S. Eismont and her husband Archie of Franklin, and Kurt A. Bickel and his wife Kimberly of Painesville, OH; a granddaughter, Amy. A twin brother survives, Gerald E. Bickel and his wife Sandy of Reno, as well as a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In addition to his parents, Gordon was preceded in death by a son, Rodney Joseph; three brothers, Richard, Calvin W., and Wayne, and a sister, Ruth Ross.

Friends will be received at the Hile-Best Funeral Home Inc. 2781 State Rt. 257 Seneca, Cranberry Twp. from 1-3 and 6-8 p.m. Friday. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday from the funeral home with the Rev. Matthew Ruyechan, OFM Pastor St. Stephen Parish Oil City, officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Garden in Cranberry. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seneca Volunteer Fire Dept. PO Box 272, Seneca, PA 16346.

Harold R. Thomas

Harold R. Thomas, 75, of 5279 U.S. Route 62 died at 12:26 A.M. Tuesday Feb. 4, 2014 at UPMC-Northwest in Seneca.

Born Sept. 19, 1938 in Titusville, PA., he was the son of the late Lloyd & Mae Eddy Thomas.

Harold was a graduate of Titusville High School.

He had worked for Pennzoil, Wolf’s Head and had retired from Quaker State where he worked as a budget manager.

Mr. Thomas was married on Oct. 6, 1962 to Marilynn D. “Pinky” Smith and she survives.

Harold was past treasurer of the Venango County Humane Society.

He enjoyed growing exotic flowers and orchids and also enjoyed cooking, gardening and in later years bird watching.

Harold is survived by his two sons, Wade Alan Thomas of Oil City, Michael Craig Thomas & his wife Penny of Oil City, two grandchildren, Heather and Taylor, and by many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother Donald and by two sisters Juanita and Margaret.

Their will be no viewing or visitation.

Terry Paul Blakley Sr., 51, a resident of 1421 Liberty St. Franklin was pronounced dead of natural causes Sunday, February 2, 2014 shortly after his arrival in the emergency department of UPMC-Northwest in Seneca.

He was born April 18, 1962 in Franklin, a beloved son of the late James W. and Lucille R. Tarsilia Blakley.

Juanita Wilson

Juanita Wilson, 82 of Rocky Grove Ave. Franklin, passed away at 9:25 A.M. on Wednesday February 5, 2014 at her residence and surrounded by her family.

Born July 20, 1931 in Akron, OH she was the daughter of the late Charles M. and Barbara E. Mowery Payne.

Mrs. Wilson attended Rocky Grove High School.

She enjoyed fishing, gardening and word puzzles.

In 1946 she married James Lloyd Keith and he preceded her in death in 1958. She then married Lewis E. Wilson in 1960 and he preceded her in death in 2007.

Surviving are four children; Thomas Larry Keith and his wife Marlene of Franklin, Charles Keith and his wife Nancy of Franklin, Donna Phillips and her husband Mike of Franklin, and Diana Hargenrader and her husband Mark of Franklin; a daughter in law, Georgia Keith of Franklin; and a brother, John Richard Payne.

Additionally she is survived by 9 grandchildren; Larry keith, Shannon Deal, Ellisa Heckathorne, Jamie McDonald, David Phillips, Matthew Keith, Josh Keith, Nathan Keith, Natalie Miller, and a step grandson Tim Hargenrader; 13 great-grandchildren ; two step great-grandchildren and her very best friend Grace Smith of Spring Creek.

In addition to her parents and husbands she was preceded in death by an infant daughter Sally Lou Keith, a son Raymond D. Keith and a brother Charles Delmas Payne.

There will be no visitation or services.

Interment will be made at the convenience of the family at Cooperstown Cemetery.

Douglas E. Carlson

Douglas E. Carlson, 62, of Tionesta, PA was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Tuesday morning, February 4, 2014.

Doug was born September 6, 1951 in Warren, PA. He was the son of Ronald L. and the late Alice (Kent) Carlson of Sugar Grove, PA. He was a graduate of Eisenhower High School and Edinboro University.

On June 20, 1988 Doug married Romona Smith at the Tionesta Church of God. Doug loved Forest County and served to maintain and improve the county as Conservation District Manager and Forest County Planner.

He was an active member of the Tionesta Church of God. He served the Lord diligently; teaching Sunday school, leading the Men’s Promise Keepers and serving on the Board of Trustees.

He was a member of the Masons Lodge 547 in Youngsville, PA.

Doug cared for his family and could be counted on to help and provide his opinion. His love, whit and humor will be missed by all.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Romona Carlson are children Jennifer and Kevin Call, Anchorage, AK and Jedediah and Meredith Smith, Erie, PA; grandchildren Derek, Chad and Melissa Call; his father, Ronald L. Carlson, Sugar Grove, PA; brothers Kris and Debby Carlson, Jamestown, NY and Kent and Jackie Carlson, Ashville, NY; sister Karen and Greg Beck, Randoph, NY; a nephew Eric Carlson; niece Angela and Nick Raynor and his beloved dog, Wishbone.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at the Tionesta Church of God on Saturday, February 8th at noon with lunch to follow.

The family will receive friends and loved ones from 10AM until Noon at the Church prior to the service.

June C. (Flick) Yarnell, 86, of Rocca Way, Franklin, passed away on February 6, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.

Born February 14, 1927 in Widnoon, Clarion County, June was the daughter of the late James O. and Gladys Hetrick Duncan. She was married to Burton Yarnell, who survives.

Mrs. Yarnell was a graduate of Kittanning High School, and had worked at the former Franklin Hospital as a Nursing Assistant. She was a very active member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church her entire life, where she taught both Sunday School and Bible School. Mrs. Yarnell enjoyed crafts and for many years had a booth at Franklin’s Apple Fest and other crafting events. She also participated in many Senior Citizen activities and was a member of the Utica Senior Center.

Mrs. Yarnell is survived by her son, Johnny O. Flick and his wife, Patricia, of Franklin and her daughter, Paulette O. King and her husband, Kenneth of Polk; her step-daughters, Cindy Motter and her husband, Gary, of Titusville, Marcia Henry and her husband, Bill of Epsyville, Sharon Yarnell-Phillips and husband, John of St. Albans, West Virginia, and Betsy Rhoades and her husband, Bryan, of Guys Mills.

She is also survived by her sister, Willovene Steiner of Lebanon, Ohio and her brother, Bill Duncan and his wife, Cheryl of Worthington; and her sister-in-law, Maxine Duncan of Templeton.

Mrs. Yarnell is additionally survived by her grandchildren John Allan Flick and wife JoAnn, Tonya Durkin and husband Ben and Chad Flick and wife Rachel; step-grandchildren Bill Rice and wife Leah, Randy Rice and wife Tammy, Scott Becker and wife Lisa, Melissa Winans, Rebecca Gibbs and husband Rich, Marci Free, Leah, Alicia, and Cory Greathouse, Daniel Ferrell, Tyler and Jakob Rhoades and numerous great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Yarnell was preceded in death by her first husband, John A. Flick; her brother, Fred Duncan; her sister Louave Hopper; 3 grandchildren, Kenneth, Kevin and Kris King; and her brother-in-law’s, Alvin Hopper and James Steiner.

Family and friends of Mrs. Yarnell will be received at the Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc., 1315 Chestnut Street, Franklin today February 7, 2014 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Additional viewing will take place on February 8th at 10:00 AM followed by an 11:00 AM funeral service at the funeral home with Rev. Jonathan Bell and Rev. Richard Price officiating.

Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Garden.

Harold R. Hearst

Harold R. Hearst, 64, of Oil City, passed away on Wednesday , February 5, 2014 at 8:30 a.m. UPMC-NW in Seneca.

Born on October 6, 1949 in Wayne, Michigan, he was the son of the late Joel and Katherine Morrison Hearst.  He was employed by the County of Venango as a laborer.  Mr. Hearst was a Vietnam Veteran.  He  was a member of the Franklin Free Methodist Church, and enjoyed fishing, camping, and listening to old Motown records.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He proudly served his country in the Army during the Vietnam Era, earning the National Defense Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.

Harold is survived by his sons, Thomas Hearst and his partner, Amber Knapp, of Oil City, Isiah Beach of Franklin, Alfred Harayda and his partner, John Weida, of Sarasota, FL, and Jason Covington and his partner, Lisa Hartle, of Franklin; and his daughters, Shavone Turner, Ashantae Hearst, Katherine Beach, and Elizabeth Tate and her husband, Terry, all of Franklin.  He is also survived by his former wives, Cathy Harayda and Billie Jo Hearst, both of Franklin.

Harold  is also survived by his 2 sisters, Jolene Hearst and Catherine Morrison, both of Wayne, Michigan; and his 9 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the Franklin Free Methodist Church, Buffalo Street, Franklin at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 8, 2014, with Rev. Frank Wolford officiating.  A dinner will follow the service at the church.

Gardinier Funeral Home, Inc. will be handling arrangements.

Dixie Eileen (Rihel) McKnight

Dixie Eileen (Rihel) McKnight, 61, of Boyers, passed away February 5, 2014 at Grove City Medical Center after an extended illness.

She was born February 21, 1952 in Grove City Hospital.

She was the daughter of Paul M. Rihel and Hazel (Miller) Rihel.

Dixie graduated from Moniteau High School in 1970. Dixie was married Ralph “Ed” McKnight on November 25, 1972 he passed away October 26, 2013.

She worked at the United Community Hospital, now the Grove City Medical Center for 30 years as a secretary in the ER, ICU and Transitional Care Units.

She was a member of the Boyers United Methodist Church and a social member of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department. Dixie is survived by a daughter Mindy McKnight of Boyers, and two sons Adam and Ryan McKnight of Boyers.

A brother James Rihel of Hillards, a sister Ann Newburn and her husband Geneof Eau Claire, a brother in law Robert McKnight and his wife Erma of Grove City, two nephews Jon Rihel of Eau Claire and James McKnight of Grove City, a niece Kristy Rihel Martino of Boyers and several great nieces and nephews. Proceeded by her parents, husband and a nephew Nathan Newburn.

Family will receive friends at the Larry E. McKinley Funeral Home, 109 Emlenton Street, Clintonville Pa on Sunday February 9, 2014 from 2-4 and 7-9.

Funeral service will take place at the funeral home Monday , February 10, 2014 at 11:00 am with the Pastor Kate Reitz officiating from the Eau Claire, Hilliard and Boyers United Methodist Church and Rev. Willard Morse retired Methodist minister.

Interment will take place at the Old Annandale Cemetery, Marion Township, Butler County.

Homer G. Nevel

Homer G. Nevel, of Newton Road, Pittsfield, Pa (Eldred Twp.) passed away at 10:12 am on Thursday, February 6, 2014 at his residence following a period of declining health. He was 80.

He was born in Lamartine, PA on September 14, 1933 a son of the late Roy and Bessie Kurtz Nevel, Sr. He had been married to the former Jean Copeline and subsequently married he former Katherine B. Rushton Redfoot on April 5, 1969 and she had preceded him in death on August 25, 2005. Homer had been employed at the General Tire, Ashtabula, Ohio as an instrument electrician, he then went onto work in the maintenance department of Wesley Woods United Methodist Campground from which he had retired. He was a member of the Grand Valley United Methodist Church and had attended the White Oak United Methodist Church. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Following the passing of his wife, Homer enjoyed weekly golf outings with his son, Scott. He was an avid outdoorsman and could often be found feeding the deer. Those who knew Homer, remember his smile, his wit and his positive outlook and spirit.

Homer had served as a Deputy Grandmaster of the 25th Masonic District of Ohio in 1981, he was a member of the Titusville Masonic Lodge # 754 and the Titusville VFW Post # 5958 where he had served with the honor guard. He had served as an elected Supervisor for Eldred Twp. for many years. Homer was active in the community and was instrumental in obtaining grants and funding for the 4 H Horse Club and also an ambulance for the Grand Valley Vol. Fire Department where he actively participated and had served as president. He also was a member of the “Over the Hill Gang’ working at the Oil Creek State Park to keep the hiking trails in proper order.

He is survived by a son, Scott Nevel of Ashtabula, Ohio, two daughters, Rina’ Hart and her husband James of Stoneboro and Rebecca Fassett and her husband Ron of Greenville, a brother Terry Nevel of Atlanta, Georgia 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Homer also leaves behind dear friends, Dick Fielding, Vic and Debbie Savitz, Matt and Diana Maille and his dearest friend Vi Wescoat.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Katherine and a brother Roy Nevel.

The funeral and committal service will be held on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Grand Valley United Methodist Church, 107 Good Will Street, Grand Valley, Pa with the Rev. Ralph Culp, Rev. Jerry Gray and the Rev. Lee Baker officiating. The interment will follow at the Millbank Cemetery,
Fredonia. PA. Friends may call at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home, Inc. 303 N. Washington Street, Titusville on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9. Jack Eugene Bish Sr.

e31fa2d1483ec7d0, 77, of Knox passed away Saturday February 8, 2014 at St. Vincent hospital in Erie.

Born November 16, 1936, in Hawthorn, he was the son of Ott and Myrtle Bish. On April 15, 1955, Jack married Colene Shick and she survives.

After graduating high school Jack joined the Air Force where he served 4 years during the Korean Conflict. He then went on to work for Metropolitan Life for 30 years until retiring in 1992.

Jack was a member of the Knox United Methodist Church, Knox American Legion, Knox Volunteer Fire Co., Knox Lions where he earned the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, the Beaver Twp Bucktails, Youth Field Days, Charitable Deeds and Services, Edenburg Lodge, Venango Lodge of Perfection, and New Castle Consistory.

Jack volunteered countless hours for many different organizations cooking and helping them put on meals and was recognized at Knox Horsethief Days as citizen of the year in 2004.

Jack enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing and hunting, camping, playing cards and watching the Steelers play.

In addition to his wife Jack is survived by two children Jack Bish Jr of Knox, and Cathy Lieberum of Stephens City, VA, four grandchildren Mike (Jen) Bish of Huntersville NC, Taylor Liebrum of Knox, Elisabeth Liebrum of Stephens City, VA, Lauren Reddinger of Knox and one great grandchild Sidney Bish. Also Surviving are two sisters June Matson of New Bethleham, Anna Fredricks of Denew, NY, and Carl Bish of Batavia NY. Along with his parents Jack was preceded in death by two sisters Mable Bish and Loretta Glaze and a Brother Darl Bish.

The family will received friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM Monday February 10 and from 10 to 11 AM Tuesday February 11 at the McEntire-Weaver Funeral Home Inc, 504 East Penn Ave, Knox.

Funeral services will be held at 11 Tuesday in the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Knox Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jack’s honor to the Knox United Methodist Church, the Knox Volunteer Fire Co, the Knox Lions or Charitable Deeds and Services.

Judith A. (Judy) Neely, 61, of Titusville, died peacefully at 8:35 p.m. Friday, February 7, 2014, at Meadville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center where she has been a resident since March 25, 2011.

Judy was born February 27, 1952 in Plumer a daughter of the late Carl Farley and Irene Woodcock Chappel. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her husband Nicholas A. Neely of Titusville whom she married January 8, 1972 in Vernon Township, Crawford County; five children, Nicholas A. Neely, Jr. and his wife Kimberly of Titusville, Fred Neely and his wife Barb of Titusville, Theodore Neely and his wife Julie of Titusville, Tammy Neely of Titusville and Michelle Neely of Titusville; nine grandchildren, two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a step-great granddaughter; three siblings, Martin Woodcock of Titusville, Thomas Woodcock and his wife Norma of Mercer and Karen Aites and her husband Theo of Mercer; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a son David L. Neely and four sisters Patsy Woodcock, Minniebelle Woodcock, Jennifer Woodcock and Sally Miller.

No calling hours or funeral service will be conducted. Interment of cremains will be in Jerusalem Corners Cemetery at a later time.

The family suggests that memorial contributions in Judy’s memory can be made to the charity of one’s choice.
