Harley Bontrager

Harley Bontrager, of 10620 Potaka Road Indianapolis, Indiana formerly of Cochranton, passed away at his residence in Indiana on Wednesday evening, April 2, 2014. He was 76.

He was born in Canton, Ohio on August 23, 1937 a son of the late Daniel and Anna Stutzman Bontrager. On April 20, 1958 he married the former Sara Hostetler who survives. Harley had been a lifelong truck driver who retired from IA Construction.

He was a member of the Grace Mennonite Church, Hadley. Following his retirement, Harley took up the hobby of wood working.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, three daughters, Darlene Bontrager of Indianapolis, Debbie Bontrager and her husband Joe Butterbaugh of Conneaut Lake and Dorothy Holowell and her husband Delbert of Indianapolis, 5 sisters, Betty McCrone of Hartville, Ohio, Mary Yoder of Harrisonburg, VA, Pauline Eby of Maryland, Norma Jean Bontrager of Hartville, Ohio and Dorothy Bontrager o Arizonia.2 brothers, Paul Bontrager of Hartville, Ohio and Elmer Bontrager of Georgia. 5 grandchildren, Annessa Bontrager, Kaitlyn Bontrager, Matthew Holowell, Joshua Holowell, Zachary Holowell, 2 great grandchildren Tyko Holwell and Finnigan Holowell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Harley Bontrager, Jr. and Darvin Bontrager, 1 sister Clara Bontrager and a brother Daniel Bontrager, Jr.

The funeral service will be held on Sunday at 2:00 pm at the Cochranton Community Church, 3993 E. Church Street, Cochranton with Samuel Hostetler, minister of the Grace Mennonite Church officiating. The interment will follow at the Maple Grove Mennonite Cemetery, Deer CreeK Twp. Friends may call at the Robert L. Sarah Louise Strong, 79, of Sparta, formerly of Clarion County, Pa., passed away March 21, 2014, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.

Mrs. Strong was born Aug. 6, 1934 in Clarion County, Pennsylvania.

She was the daughter of the late Harold Webb and the late Thelma Hahn and the wife of Thomas Strong. Mrs. Strong was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sparta.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ralph Webb.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by four sons, William Miller and wife Rebecca, of Payson, Ariz., Jeffery Miller and wife Joyce, of Sparta, Daniel Miller, of San Diego, Calif., Theodore Miller and wife Angela, Acworth, Ga.; one daughter, Sarah Custer and husband Kenneth, of Vanderbilt, Texas; four brothers, Richard Webb and wife Maxine, of Shippenville, Pa., Philip Webb and wife Allie, of Shippenville, Pa., Gail Webb and wife Paulette, of Anderson, Ind., John Webb and wife Phidelus, of Erie, Pa.; sister, Ruth Aaron, of Hubbard, Ohio; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors.

Alice V. Beatty, age 78, formerly of Conneaut Lake, PA passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at White Cliff Health and Rehabilitation Center, Greenville, PA
She was born March 2, 1936 in Franklin, PA the daughter of the late Howard J. and Leona Ruth Coulter Kilgore.

She attended Rocky Grove High School. She had been employed as a Nurse’s Aide at Meadville Medical Center, retiring December 1, 1998. She was of the Protestant Faith and enjoyed making crafts, gardening, and flea marketing.

Alice was a member of the Station #3, Conneaut Lake, PA.

She is survived by a son, Leroy D. Shuffstall of Franklin, PA, a daughter, Patricia A. Watson and her husband John T. Watson of Conneaut Lake, PA, a son, Ronald A. Shuffstall and his wife Cathy of Cooperstown, PA, and a daughter, Linda Baker and her husband, Chuck of Greenville, PA; 12 grandchildren: Jason Shuffstall, Bradly Shuffstall, Carina Warnick, Bobbi Jo Callis, David Watson, Ron Woods, Misty Shuffstall, Melissa Shuffstall, Danielle Shuffstall, Brady Baker, Tina Kolbrich and Jessica Baker, 19 Great-grandchildren, three brothers, Paul Kilgore, Robert Kilgore, and Donald Kilgore, a sister, Florence Scriven.

In addition to her parents, Alice was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Beatty and Harry Beatty, two brothers; James Kilgore and Lawrence Kilgore, and by three sisters, Ruth O’Neil, Mary Updike, Grace O’Neil.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 from 2 to 4 PM at the Dickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N Second Street, Conneaut Lake, PA. All are welcome to attend the memorial service at 4 PM on Wednesday at the funeral home with Pastor David Brumagin, officiating. Burial will be in the Cooperstown Cemetery.

Louise Smerkar

Louise Smerkar, 96, of Fryburg passed away April 5, 2014 at Golden Living Center in Shippenville.

Born on May 20, 1917 in Clarion PA she was the daughter of Augustine and Anna Denslinger Hartle.

Louise was married on June 29, 1939 to Raymond E. Smerkar who preceded her in death on June 30, 1969.

She was a member of St. Michael Church and Rosary Society in Fryburg and at the time of her passing was the oldest parishioner at St. Michael’s Church.

Louise worked for the Faller Family for over 50 years at both Faller’s Furniture and Faller Funeral Home.

She was an avid Bingo player, enjoyed sewing and especially enjoyed spending time with her family including her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Louise is survived by her children: Peggy Schoch and husband Ed of Los Angeles, CA; Charlene Frack and husband Marvin of Whitehall, PA; Sam Smerkar and wife Ann of Venus; Valerie Fisher and husband Daniel of Pittsburgh, PA; Douglas Smerkar and wife Julie of Fryburg. Also surviving grandchildren include: Michelle Sandrock-Corrow, Samantha Schmader, Erika Moore, Ryan Smerkar, Amanda Mainarich, Melissa Mainwaring, Mark Fisher, Darla Smerkar, Shane Smerkar, and Mathias Smerkar; also surviving are eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, twin infant sons, and a sister Dorothy M. Weirich.

Family and friends will be received on Monday, April 7, 2014 from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm at Faller Funeral Home, Inc. in Fryburg. A parish vigil will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 3:45 pm.

Mass of a Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at 10am at St. Michael Church in Fryburg with Rev. D.G. Davis III, Pastor as celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Michael Cemetery following the mass.

Memorials in her name may be made to Golden Living Center in Shippenville.

Caroline Mary Johnston, 52, of 1330 New Street ,Franklin died at 10:00 AM Friday ,April 4, 2014, at her residence.

Born January 7, 1962, in Bloomington, IN, Caroline was the daughter of James and Areta Ann (Goodwill) Johnston.

Caroline was a 1979 graduate of El Cajon Valley High School.

She enjoyed woodworking and basket weaving.

In addition to her father, Caroline is survived by her sisters, Kim Irene Bogart of Vienna, VA and Katherine Jane Young and her husband, Steven, of King George, VA; and her nieces and nephews, James Edward Bogart, Elisabeth Irene Pafford & husband Andrew, Briann Coats & her husband, Bronson, Bryce Young and wife, Samantha, Blaine Young, Donovan Coats, Zachary Coats, and Alexander Coats.

She was preceded in death by her mother.

Services for Caroline will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be in St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

Lorraine B. Harkless

Lorraine B. Harkless, 72, of 11 E 7th St, Oil City, died at 12:56 am, Friday, April 4, 2014, at UPMC Northwest in Seneca.

Born March 23, 1942, in Lackawanna County, she was a daughter of the late Lewis and Leona Smith Jocelyn.

Mrs. Harkless worked as a bartender at the Pulaski Club.

She also belong to several clubs including the VFW Auxiliary.

She was an avid bowler.

Surviving are a brother, Wayne Jocelyn; a sister-in-law, Nadine Jocelyn; a nephew, Norm Hoskins; a niece, Bonnie Sibum; many great nieces and nephews; and her companion, Robert Ritts.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Jocelyn, a sister, Louise Hoskins, and her husband Robert Harkless.

Friends may call at the Morrison Funeral Home on today from 1 to 3 pm.

A Funeral Service will be conducted in the funeral home at 3 pm today.

Committal services will be held at the Sunnyside Cemetery in Tunkhannock on Friday.

Robert K. Bennett

Mr. Robert K. Bennett, 86, of 12570 State Hwy 8, Titusville passed away at 10:20 a.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Country Acres Personal Care Home. He had been a patient there for the past few weeks.

Mr. Bennett was born on July 20, 1927, in Titusville to the late William and Beulah Kerr Bennett.

He was a graduate of Titusville High School, class of 1945.

He was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II. He entered the service on August 15, 1945, and served as a military policeman in Germany. Mr. Bennett was honorably discharged on February 15, 1947, at Ft. Dix, NJ with the rank of Private First Class.

Robert was employed for 35 years with the Titusville Post Office and retired in 1985, as the Supervisor.

He was a life member of the First Presbyterian Church in Titusville, a 63 year member of the Titusville Lodge #754 F&A.M., a past high priest of the Aaron Royal Arch and a commander of Rose Criox Commandary Knights Templar, #38.

Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife of 14 years, Therese L’Huillier Kurtic Bennett of Titusville who he married on October 2, 1999; three children, Matthew Bennett and wife Lisa of Mahopac, NY, Mark Bennett and wife Stephanie of Chula Vista, CA, Rebecca Biddle and husband Dan of Pittsburgh; three grandchildren, Clarke Bennett of Mahopac, NY, Joshua Bennett, Jonathan Bennett of Chula Vista, CA; two step-daughters, Crescent Birtciel and husband Sam of Titusville, Darlene Dillemuth and husband Bob of Erie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marilyn Straite Bennett who he married on October 22, 1949, and who preceded him in death on November 17, 1995; and two sisters, Jane Dawson and Margaret Hatfield.

No calling hours will be observed.

A memorial service will be conducted for relatives and friends at the Gordon B. Garrett Funeral Home on Saturday, April 12th at 2:00 PM with Dr. Barry E. Cressman, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, officiating.

Full military rites will be conducted by officers and members of the Bruce Shorts Post 5958 VFW and Cleo J. Ross Post 368 American Legion.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Eileen B. Fletcher

Eileen B. Fletcher, 89, of Fryburg, passed away Sunday, April 6, 2014 at her home.

Born on February 8, 1925 in Strobleton, PA she was the daughter of Harry E. and Barbara S. Hartle Eisenman.

Eileen was a graduate of Shippenville High School.

On March 5, 1946 she was married to Paul J. Fletcher who preceded her in death on January 5, 1986.

Eileen was a member of St. Michael Church and Rosary Society in Fryburg.

Eileen worked at Owens Illinois in Clarion, Continental Can in Oil City, she was an Erie Insurance Agent for 36 years, a Notary Public and a book keeper. Later she became co-owner of Fletcher’s Garage in Fryburg.

She enjoyed bingo, quilting, gardening, cross word puzzles and bird watching. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and especially all of her grandchildren.

Eileen is survived by her children: Michael Fletcher and wife Rosemary of Derwood MD; Patrick Fletcher and wife Ruth of Denver CO; Michele Spence and her husband Jeffrey of St. Mary’s; Paulette Colantonio and her husband John of Fern; Kim Fletcher and his wife Marie of Shippenville and Claire Cunningham and husband Robert of Oil City; and Paul Fletcher Jr. and wife Brenda of Elizabeth CO. Also surviving are twenty-three Grandchildren and nineteen Great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a grandson Nicholas Fletcher. Eileen was the last surviving member of her family. She was preceded in death by her siblings: Choletta Schupp, Gertrude Beers, Eva Kaltenbach, Priscilla Karg, Rosie Eisenman, Mary Schrecengost, Maurice Eisenman, Miles Eisenman, Emma Dugan, Edith Banner, and infant brothers Harry and Leonard.

The family will receive friends from 2pm to 4pm and 7pm to 9pm on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Faller Funeral Home, Inc. in Fryburg. A parish vigil service will be held at 8:30pm on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the funeral home.

Mass of a Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Friday, April 11, 2014 at St. Michael Church in Fryburg with Rev. David Poulson, Pastor of St. Anthony of Padua in Cambridge Springs, PA as celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Michael Cemetery following the Mass.

Memorials may be made to Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice Program or the St. Michael Church Organ Fund.

Born Nov. 10, 1961 in Oil City, PA., he was the son of Betty Marshall McCauley Spence and the late Clifford S. McCauley.

Stephen was a graduate of Oil City High School.

He had been employed for over twenty years in the Maintenenace Dept. at the Venango Regional Airport. He was a heavy equipment operator, an aircraft rescue fireman, an aircraft refueler and “Mr. Fix It.”

Airport manager O.C. Bell said “Steve was the best, one of the smartest men he has come across in 40 years in the business., and he will be missed greatly.”

Stephen faithfully attended his children’s sporting events and was very proud of his son Stephen and his daughter Sarah, they were his world.

He enjoyed softball and golfing.

Stephen was of the Catholic Faith.

In addition to his mother Betty Spence of Oil City, he is survived by A son, Stephen McCauley of Oil City, A daughter, Sarah McCauley of Oil City, A sister, Kathy Vincent of East Liverpool, OH, A brother, Kevin McCauley of Fresno,CA, A step brother, David Spence of Montana, And the following step sisters, Anna Loll & her husband Mike of Titusville, Joy Porter & her husband Dan, Sally Nick-Read, Roberta Spence, Patty Cooper & her husband Paul, All of Texas, And by several nieces and nephews

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his step father Samuel J. Spence, 3 brothers, Samuel C. McCauley, Michael S. McCauley and Daniel J. McCauley, A stepbrother Stephen Spence and a stepsister Jamie Laster

Friends will be received from 7-9 P.M Wednesday and from 2-4 and from 7-9 P.M. Thursday in the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 A.M. Friday in St. Joseph’s Church with Fr. Justin P. Pino, Pastor, Presiding.

Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.

thumbsV. Lorraine Truitt, 78, of Hawthorn, died Monday morning, April 7 at the Clarion Hospital. She was born on February 18, 1936 in Hawthorn and was the daughter of Norman and Evelyn (Boozer) Slagle. She married Edward T. Truitt Sr. on September 11, 1955, and he preceded her in death on March 10, 2011.

Lorraine was a member of the Hawthorn Calvary United Methodist Church. She graduated from Redbank Valley High School in 1954. She worked as a group leader for Rola Jensen Company. She enjoyed cooking and baking, going camping, and crocheting.

She is survived by a daughter, Joyce A. Shearer and her husband Todd of Oak Ridge; two sons, Edward T. Truitt Jr. and his wife Sandy of Grindstone, and Michael A. Truitt of Fairmount City; six grandchildren, Scott Truitt and wife Heather, Brandy Bish and friend Joe Rupp, Leslie Truitt and friend Bill Kriebel, Erin Truitt, Nathan Shearer, and Lisha Shearer; nine great grandchildren, Griffin, Grayson, Shaylee, Baylee, Isaac, Hayley, Kayden, Kayleb, and Garrett; and two sisters, Betty Hewitt of Tennessee and Patricia McQuown of Brookville.

In addition to her husband Edward Truitt Sr., she was preceded in death by both parents, a brother, Gerald Slagle, and a sister, Gail E. Dinger.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 9, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 8 at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn and on Thursday, April 10, from 10 – 11 at the Hawthorn Calvary United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 10 at 11:00 am at the church with her son, Pastor Edward T. Truitt Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Kellersburg Methodist Cemetery, Madison Township, Armstrong County.

Reed (Pete) Russell Rhodes, 86, of Brookville, died Monday April 7th, 2014 at the Brookville Hospital. He was born November 2nd, 1927 in Tionesta, PA, son of the late Henry S. Rhodes and Evelyn Thompson Rhodes. On May 22, 1947, he married the late Kathleen B. Wile.

Pete was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. Pete worked as a salesman for Hiland Thompson’s Wholesale Dry Good and Clothing, as partner in Emery’s Tin Shop of Brookville, and for 17 years at Deman’s Sporting Goods as clerk and then newsroom manager.

Pete was a member if the First United Methodist Church in Brookville and enjoyed spending time with his family, working with wood, and traveling. Pete served on the Laurel Board for 17 years, was past master at Olive Temple Lodge #557, and a charter member of the Jefferson County Tourist Agency.

He is survived by two daughters, Kathy Johnston of Butler, Karen Caylor and husband Rodney of Sprankle Mills; five grandchildren, Sam Menchyk and wife Jane of Pittsburgh, Amanda Tomer and husband Scott of Painesville, OH, Amy Kelley and husband Tom of Pittsburgh, Abby Kengersky of Punxsutawney, and Adam Caylor and wife Leslie of Sprankle Mills; and two great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, William Hoolver and Gayland Rhodes, and one sister, Wilda Rhodes.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday April 9th, 2014 at the McKinney Funeral Home, Brookville, PA. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday April 10th, 2014, at the funeral home with The Rev. Sharon L. Schwab officiating.

Annette L. Smith

Annette L. Smith, 54 of Rimersburg, died on Monday, April 7, at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. She was born on May 4, 1959 in Brookville and was the daughter of Harlow M. and Helen M. (Stadelmyer) Packard, Jr.

Annette graduated from Redbank Valley High School in 1977 and from Clarion State College in 1981. She taught at Steubenville High School in Ohio and at Nature’s Classroom in Connecticut. She also worked in Connecticut for the Episcopal Camp and Conference Center. She worked at the Clarion Clipper restaurant and Sally Beauty Supply. She was a Clinic Manager and Certified Lactation Counselor for the WIC Program in Clarion. She was a Eucharistic Minister and attended St. Richards Catholic Church in Rimersburg since 1987. She also was a PTO past treasurer and president of Union Elementary Schools. She enjoyed reading, weaving, sewing, traveling, shopping and collecting Pepsi items. She was very active in her children’s extracurricular actives.

She is survived by a son, Jedediah J. Smith of Fort Knox, Kentucky; two daughters, Caitlin E. Smith and Gabrielle N. Smith both of Rimersburg; three sisters, Marilyn J. Mitchell and her husband Lee of Erie, C. Jean Miller and her husband Roger of New Bethlehem, and Margaret Packard of Greensburg; and a brother-in-law, Larry Snyder and his wife Chris of Pittsburgh.

She was preceded in death by both of her parents and a sister, Susan I. (Packard) Snyder

Visitation will be on Friday, April 11, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. A Prayer Vigil Service will be held at 4:00 pm on Friday at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, April 12, at 11:00 am at the St. Charles Catholic Church in New Bethlehem with Rev. Father Sam Bungo officiating. Interment will be at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery in New Bethlehem.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations may be made to the Annette L. Smith Memorial Fund at S & T Bank in New Bethlehem.

Maxine “Mickey” N. Scannell

Maxine “Mickey” N. Scannell, formerly of Franklin, passed away on Wednesday, April 9th at Wesbury United Methodist Community in Meadville.

Born April 27, 1928 in Cranberry Township, Venango County, Maxine was the daughter of the late George E. and Gertrude Lineman Nunemaker. She was married to George H. Scannell on April 2, 1953 and he preceded her in death on October 11, 2004.

Mickey was a Cranberry High School graduate. She worked at Polk Center as a Personnel Specialist for 36 years. Maxine was a charter member of the Community Church of God in Cooperstown and a member of Morris Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She enjoyed reading and knitting, and was known for her “knitted socks”. She also enjoyed her 4-legged companion, Raggs and the times she spent with her family.

Mickey is survived by her brother, Sylvester “Bill” Nunemaker of Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her son, Steven D. Scannell; her brother, Rudolph Nunemaker; and her sisters, Martina Meddock, Elsie Davis, and Louise Weckerly.

A memorial service for Mickey will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 12 at the Community Church of God in Cooperstown, with Rev. Barry Markle, pastor of the church, officiating. Interment will be in Franklin Cemetery.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Maxine’s memory to the Community Church of God in Cooperstown, Wesbury United Methodist Community – 31 N. Park Avenue, Meadville, PA 16335. and/or a charity or organization of one’s choice.

Eleanor M. Brzuz Fidorek, 88, of 617 Mitchell Ave. Oil City, PA. died at 5:40 A.M. Wednesday April 9, 2014.

Born Sept. 17, 1925 in West Hickory, PA., she was the daughter of the late Lawrence W. Cherry & Orpha M. Whitten Cherry.

Mrs. Fidorek was a graduate of Oil City High School.

Eleanor was married on Dec. 26, 1955 to Joseph S. Brzuz and he passed away on Dec. 2, 1979.

She later married John Fidorek on Oct. 1, 1983 and he soon passed on Feb. 22, 1984.

She had worked at the family grocery store, Joe’s Superior Market, which was known for their Polish kielbasa for many years and later was a RSA at Polk Center.

Eleanor was a member of the Assumption B.V.M. Church, and the Church Rosary Society.

She enjoyed traveling, reading , knitting, painting and playing Bingo.

Mrs. Fidorek was a member of the Pulaski Club and a former member of the Sweet Adelines.

Eleanor was a devoted mother, grandmother & great grandmother and most enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her daughter Patricia Bajorek of Franklin, Two granddaughters Tessa Miller & her husband Matthew of Oil City, Tami Bowman & her husband James of York, PA; Three great- granddaughters, Sydney & Kendall Miller and Elizabeth Bowman; Three sisters, Rita Toy & her husband Robert of Oil City, Ruth Morrow of Sandy Lake, Janet Irwin of Chicago; And many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husbands, she was preceded in death by her son –in –law Robert V. Bajorek, Two sisters, Lois Cherry and Shirley Scott; And a brother Telmar Cherry.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and from 6-8 P.M. Friday in the Reinsel Funeral Home & Crematory.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Saturday in the Assumption Church with Fr. Justin P. Pino, Pastor, Presiding.

Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery.

Remona E.”Mona” Kerlin

Remona E.”Mona” Kerlin, 94, formerly of Rockville, died Monday, April 7, 2014 at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

Born May 20, 1919, in Rockville, she was a daughter of the late Haven and Verna (Whistler) Schlegel. Her husband, Arthur D. Kerlin, whom she married Aug. 2, 1945, died Jan. 1, 2011.

She is survived by two sons, Ron Kerlin and wife, Pat, of Emlenton and Cliff Kerlin and wife, Doris, of Mifflintown; five grandchildren, Patrick Kerlin, Nicholas Kerlin, Andrea Hoven, Aaron Kerlin, and Kerry Kerlin, and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Edith Naylor, one brother, George “Clyde’ Schlegel, and two grandsons, Christopher Kerlin and Keith Kerlin.

Mona graduated from Juniata Joint High School and worked at Juniata Garment during World War II. From 1957 until she retired in 1981, she was a cook in the Juniata County School District.

She enjoyed cooking, baking and taking care of the neighborhood cats.

Her funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Pastor Gay Irwin officiating.

Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Mifflintown.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pet Food Pantry, PO Box 3, McAlisterville, PA 17049.

Howard Quinn Rudolph

Howard Quinn Rudolph, 93, of Rich St., Oil City, passed into a new life Wednesday, April 9, 2014, a Oakwood Heights in Oil City.

Born February 10, 1921 in DuBois, he was the son of the late Howard and Zerda Vallies Rudolph.

He had served in the United States Army as a Platoon Sgt., during World War II and had received The American Defense Service Medal-Purple Heart, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and Four Battle Stars and other Military Honors.

Mr. Rudolph was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Oil City, and served on several committees and also was an usher.

He was a life Member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 464.

Mr. Rudolph also was a member of Petrolia Lodge No. 363 F&AM, Venango Lodge of Perfection, New Castle Consistory, and the Consistory Legion of Honor.

He worked for Pennsylvania Railroad, National Transit Pump and Machine Co., and Sears Roebuck and Company.

Mr. Rudolph also was a retired Fire Fighter and Fire Marshall.

He was married January 30, 1946 to the former Minnie Ruth Tarr by the Rev. C.J. Whitlatch of Grace United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on March 24, 2008.

He is survived by one daughter, Toni Ann Sallade and husband Allan of Oil City; two sons, Thomas Rudolph and wife Sandy of San Diego, Calf, and Tracy Rudolph and wife Debbie of Plummer; four grandchildren, Traci Sallade-Underhill and husband Kai, and Tabitha Romero and husband Daniel, all of California, and Rebecca Rudolph and Adam Rudolph of Oil City; and five great grandchildren, Paul Anthony Sallade, Daniel Romero and Kayla Romero, of California, and Mathew Tracy Rudolph and Hayden Rudolph of Oil City.

Also surviving are one brother, Phin Rudolph of Erie; two sisters, Zerda Boland of Chicago and Martha Holtz of Warren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Vernon V. Rudolph and two sisters, Dorothy Lilly and Aleen Summers.

Arrangements will be handled by Morrison Funeral Home.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be in Brandon Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Grace United Methodist Church, 100 Central Ave, Oil City PA 16301, or to a charity of one’s choice.

Wanda L. Carrell

Wanda L. Carrell of Orchard Manor, Pine Township, formerly of Mercer, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2014, in Grove City Medical Center, Pine Township, after a short illness. She was 88.

Mrs. Carrell was born Aug. 27, 1925, in Leesburg, Springfield Township, to Clyde McCracken and Evelyn Rose Wimer McCracken.

She was employed for more than 35 years at Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion.

Wanda was of the Protestant faith and was noted for her beautiful work painting ceramics and making jewelry.

Her husband, George A. Garris Sr., preceded her in death. She later married Donald Carrell, who also preceded her in death.

She is survived by: her two sons, William C. Garris and George A. Garris Jr., both Clarion; and two sisters, Doris Tarsilia and Edna Kreutz, both Grove City.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Leona Ann Garris Fresh.

There will be no calling hours.
